SIMPSONs of Lichfield
« on: Monday 27 July 09 05:52 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in the SIMPSON family from Lichfield. SOPHIA ANN SIMPSON was baptised there in 1801, according to the IGI, and in 1838 she married her cousin STEVEN SIMPSON from Wolston Wrk  after which they came to Australia where  SOPHIA died soon after arriving. STEPHEN built a farmhouse on the outskirts of Brisbane where he ran a horse stud.He named this house Wolston House and it still stands today under the protection of the National Trust of Queensland. I am a volunteer at the house and am attempting to trace some of the SIMPSON family history for our records. STEPHEN returned to the UK around 1860 after several setbacks in his life.

SOPHIA'S father was STEPHEN SIMPSON who we believe was the Town Clerk of Lichfield for 33 years. We think he married SARAH SOPHIA STARTIN in 1798 at Birmingham
Hoping someone else has an interest in this family

There is a document at the William Salt Library in Stafford which mentions Simpson, Town Clerk

  S. MS. 478/19/56
Two letters from Stephen Simpson, Lichfield town clerk, to John Barker on how his watercourse for Wichnor Ironworks may affect turnpike. Best to involve Erasmus Darwin.
