Can anyone help re Marks
« on: Monday 27 July 09 21:25 UTC (UK) »

I am researching the Marks family who were resident on Brownsea Island approx 1859 - 1869. I have details of the parents, William and Martha, and most of the children, but records are difficult for 2 of them. Emily Constance was born on Brownsea and baptised at St Marys on 17th January 1869. I have gone through the Parish Registers for St Mary's Brownsea which are held in St Peter's Church, Parkstone, Poole and confirmed the births of 7 Marks children between 1859 and 1869, two of whom died in infancy. Emily does not appear on the 1871 census, when Martha was in Poole with 4 children, sister Alice with her grandmother still on Brownsea and father William apparently in the US. When the family emigrated on the ss Abyssinia later in 1871 there was no Emily, so I assume she had died. Only death I can find is in June qtr 1869 in Shaftesbury.
On the 1871 census living with her mother is Francis (probably actually Frances). There is a record of her death aged 0 in Jun qtr 1871 in Poole, but I can find no birth record.
Can anyone help with either of these, please?

The excellent      http://www.opcdorset.com/      might be worth looking through.

There is a search facility ...

Thanks - that's where this quest started. When I found the OPC I looked through all the information about Poole and surrounding (then) parishes. That's where I found Sophia Tilley aged 20 with Martha Tilley aged 4 in 1841 in Longfleet. Sophia was on the Tilley Family Tree which we started with, but there was no mention of Martha! Following it all through got us to where we are today - looking for Marks children who died in infancy in Poole, and following up the rest of the Marks family in the US - a kind guy was looking up obituaries in Florida for us last weekend (to no avail).
Anyway, I would still welcome any suggestions for Emily and Francis (or Frances!)
