FREEMAN of Norton Cuckney, Notts. (1841/51 censuses) - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 01:47 UTC (UK) »

I have an ancestor called Mary Ann Freeman, the IGI shows that she was born at Norton Cuckney in 1832 to Henry and Ann Freeman. I've located their marriage (Henry Freeman & Ann Mee) earlier that year in Cuckney, and also the birth of a sister Elizabeth Freeman born 1835 in Cuckney. However, I have not been able to find any trace of Mary Ann before she married in 1854 at Worksop. I was thinking that perhaps her father died (which might be why she had only one sister), then maybe her mother remarried so she would be found under a different surname??? With this in mind I still haven't been able to find any of the family in 1841/51 so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Alexander

Quite typical, I've searched for weeks for them and the moment I post a request for them I find them. In 1841 they were in Whitwell just over the border into Derbyshire. In 1851 they were still living there but Mary's birthplace was recorded as "Morton, Northamptonshire" rather than "Norton, Notts"! Henry was gone for both, but Ann was recorded as "married" so he was probably still alive. Well the search will continue for him.

Hello, My direct ancestors are Freeman from Norton Cuckney My GGGrandfather being John Freeman b around 1786 and lived in Corton Cuckney from at least 1806. During my searches into the family of one of his sons Henry b1828 I dicovered that he was lodging in Lincoln and working as a Groom according to the census of 1851. Also lodging in Lincoln at this time at 431 High Street was another Henry Freeman b 1804 also working as a Groom This Henry I believe is the one missing from the 1851 Whitwell Mill Ash census and was married to Ann Mee. From the 1861 census he was listed as a Horse Braker and born in Thoresby. Based on the  asumption that he would have been baptised in Edwinstowe as  the church for the Thoresby Estate was not built until 1876 I have still to searchthe church records if this is so and  to find out if the parents of my GGGrandfather were also from Edwinstowe as this is fairly near to Cuckney I hope this small piece of information is of interest
Best Regards

Hi, I have now been able to trace Ann through all the censuses right to 1901. Her husband Henry Freeman had died before 1871. I had also found that 1851 census for Henry in Lincoln but I wasn't sure if it was the right one since the birthplace was just "Nottinghamshire". As you say, since his birthplace was recorded as Thorsby and I can't check the parish registers, I have not been able to progress any further with this line.

Thanks for getting in touch,
Alexander
