Derbyshire or Lancashire? Where to start.
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 11:52 UTC (UK) »

Hi,  I need help getting started please.
I am trying to find the parents of Miriam Newton.

Did her family come from Derbyshire, or Lancashire?

All I know about her is, she was born about 1908, October 4th.
She married Colin Beer in Chesterfield, in 1930.
Her first child, my mother, was born in Bolton, Lancaster, in 1933.
Her second child, my uncle, was born in Farnworth, Lancashire, in 1936.
Her third child, my aunt, was born in Chesterfield, in 1938, and the family lived in Chesterfield.
Miriam died in 1985 in Chesterfield.

I would like to know the names of her parents and where they came from, so I can start on this branch of the family tree.

It is a mystery to me as to why, two of her children were born in Lancashire, when the family lived in Chesterfield.
Did she have family who lived there?

Please can anyone help set me on the right path to finding them.
cg fan.

Hi Cg Fan,

The only matching birth registration that I can see for an October birth is:

Miriam Newton
Dec 1908 Chesterfield
7b 790

Have you tried finding her in 1911 yet?

Hi Tati
I have not tried 1911 yet as I wasn't sure if it was the right person, and  I have not committed myself to subscribing yet.
Could be the place to start though, Thank you.

Hi cg fan,
The birth certificate will at least identify her parents and that would help you to find them on the 1911 Census and  look for their marriage etc.

As to why two children were born in Lancshire - this was the 30s - unemployment was high, so it may be that the parents moved where they could get work (Bolton & Farnworth have strong textile associations) and then moved "home" later when there was local work - the father's occupation on the children's birth certificates may give a clue. If you haven't got these you could see if any baptisms are on the Lancashire OPC site - these transcriptions often include father's occupation.

It's not a subscription site. Details are pretty expensive to view but using the advanced free search feature you can usually find out the household composition.

In this case, you'll probably find out that parents are Frank Isaac age 42 and Elizabeth Agnes age 41.

A Frank Isaac Newton married an Elizabeth Agnes Bennett, Jun 1889 Chesterfield 7b 1059.

Do you have access to the 1901 and earlier censuses?

Yes I have access to 1901 and earlier censuses, thank you for your help. I will follow this up, now I have a starting point.

Interesting thought as to why the family may have moved about, thanks.
