Hi. Does anyone know what role number 44 Wright Street, HULL would have taken in 1938? Would it have been just a domestic household?
My reason for asking is that I believe my Mother lived there in June 1938 - her surname was HOWARD and her son Leslie was apparently born there.
Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem could be helpful.
With thanks, Pete

Hi Andrea. Thanks - I tried that but found nothing on number 44, plus I was advised they were probably all shops/businesses now.
I suspect, as you say they were all houses back then, but I was wondering (not knowing the area that well) if in 1938 number 44 may have been some sort of a 'home/hostel' for unmarried mothers - things were quite different in those days and they would often be 'sent away' to have their child - in this case, all the way from Kent. I'm probably wrong on that, it's just a thought, but we know of no relatives in Hull, or of any other reason she would travel al the way from Kent to have her child in Hull. Strange.... Pete

Hi Pete, Maybe you could try contacting the local history department based at The Central Library in Hull as it's only a couple of streets away from Wright Street.
I'm hoping to be in Hull later in the week so if I have time I'll have a look for No.44
happy hunting

Thanks Bee, will do that tomorrow - maybe they'll have some old maps too. They'll also know of anywhere she may have gone for help I guess, though the birth certificate definitely states 44 Wright Street as the place of birth so I guess that must be it. Will keep an eye open on here in case you spot something. Pete

I looked up Wright St. in the 1939 directory. It's a mixture of business premises and residential, but there's no one listed at no. 44. I photocopied the page and will gladly send it to you. These were large Victorian houses, in the wrong place for someone who wanted a house that size to live in, so they've become shops, workshops and offices with a few converted into flats. I looked for Howards in the alphabetical section of the directory, but there are none in Wright St. Ann

Hi Ann. Thanks for doing that. I looked at the Electoral roles for 1938 and it showed three males living in there at the time, but no Lilian HOWARD, though she would've been under age anyway at 18. I wondered if it had been a lodging house of some sort? Bit of a mystery.
I've got a couple of other things happening regarding this, so will post my finds as they come in. Thanks again. Pete

Hi Pete,
I took a walk down Wright Street today but no luck with No 44.
The street is shorter than it used to be as part of it was cleared to make way for a new road (Freetown Way) and it looks as though no. 44 is now under the road.

Hi Bee. Thanks for taking a look, my mate reckons it's possibly under the furniture store! Eirther way, the houses nearby give a good idea of what it was like, I reckon it was pretty big - apparently some were used as lodging houses, which would clear up my situation. Thanks Bee, and everyone else for all your help. Pete

http://www.historicaldirectories.org The above site gives access to Kelly,s Directory of N & E Ridings Of Yorkshire 1913 44 Wright Street appears to be just a dwelling. At this time a Mrs Jane Kelly resided there. This is the only info I could find on the dwelling!

Hi Debs, sorry for not seeming to have responded, I thought this thread had dried up and I've only just spotted it on a passing re-visit! Unfortunately my search ended up being a false lead, but I thank nyou for the info nonetheless. Many thanks anyway. Good luck with your own research. Pete
