Saint David's Day - Gŵyl Ddewi

The 1st of March is Saint David's day for Wales.
("Diwrnod Dewi Sant" or "Gŵyl Ddewi" as the Welsh say).

It commemorates Saint David who is the patron saint of Wales.

Saint David was the Archbishop of Wales in the 6th century, and was born in the place now named Saint David in South West Wales.(For a good background, see http://www.sucs.org/~rhys/stdavid.html )

The Welsh celebrate the day by wearing the national emblem, the leek or the national flower, the daffodil. Those lucky enough to time a St David's day with a visit to see "Mam a Dad" will no doubt be greeted with a big welcome and an even bigger bowl of "Cawl Cennin" (Leek Broth) and a good big thick piece of bread and butter ("Bara Menyn"!).
