Hello Rootschatters! Some of my request MAY sound familiar, HOWEVER, I think my brickwall was caused by me confusing two Margaret (Ann) Scotts who each had a Father named Thomas. I FINALLY found my grandfather, William John King, b. 24 March 1860 in Newcastle-on-Tyne in the 1871 census living in Shotley Bridge, Co. Durham (RG 10/4957 (53) on #1 Green Street. That's when the eyes could not believe what they were seeing! In that census, Wm. John's Mother indicated she was b abt 1833 in Norham, NBL. So, my quest now is to find the family in 1861 census where William John would be slightly less than a year old. His parents will be (I hope!) Charles King b. abt 1830 in Berwickshire, Scotland and employed possibly as a gas fitter and his Mother will be Margaret (Ann) b. abt 1833 - hopefully in Norham, NBL. On several civil birth certs for her children, Margaret's forename has varied from Margaret to Margaret Ann in about 50% of the cases. However, her maiden name has always been listed as Scott. Thank you sincerely for anyone who can find this family -- probably still in Newcastle. Pat

oh my, oh my! Barbara, I just went out to church and dinner and I came home to find that you had broken down my brickwall! I cannot tell you how wonderfully happy I am. I had feared that I would never solve my Margaret Ann Scott mystery. To add, I do have the civil marriage cert for Charles King and Margaret Scott: Charles states his Father was Charles King, a hedger and Margaret states her Father was Thomas Scott a cattle dealer. I have scoured business directories up until 1855 and I cannot find any cattle dealers listed. Obviously, I am missing something. (BTW, the civil marriage cert does not indicate that either Father was deceased at the time of the marriage. (I know that may not necessarily be true!) I am SO grateful for this information. Rootschatters ARE the greatest!!! Thank you! Pat

Hi Pat,
I'm wondering if Thomas was widowed and maybe that's why Margaret was living with her aunt in 1851 and with aunt & what appears to be her grandmother in 1841. By the way, I didn't ask if you had access to those census, will give full details if not.
I've been looking for Thomas, most of them (there are several) in that area were fishermen, but have just come across one who was a farmer
HO107 Piece 318 Book 6 Folio 3 Page 1 Beal & Lowlin, Berwick upon Tweed, Durham SCOTT, Thomas 45 Farmer b. Durham + 2 shepherds and 4 servants, no other Scott living with him
Lowlin is abt 11 miles from Norham.
Just checking 1851 for him
Barbara

Hello Barbara, Thank you so much for the extra effort. I was thinking that either Thomas Scott, cattle dealer, had been widowed by the birth of one of the children and that's why Margaret was apparently raised by the Paxtons. OR, that Margaret herself may have been illegitimate and raised by the Paxtons who knew that her Father was, in fact,Thomas Scott. The reason I say the latter is that I found a very interesting baptism in the IGI - a Margaret Anne PAXTON christened in 1833 at Norham illegitimate child of a Harriet Paxton --- no Margaret Ann Scott for that year and parish. Perhaps she was christened Paxton and yet through common usage was called Scott... Oh, BTW, I do not have the full entries for 1841 and 1851 to see who Isabella Paxton was living with. I think Isabella was very significant in Margaret's life as she named her first born daughter, Isabella and there were no known Isabella's on Charles King's sided of the tree. Again, thanks for your interest. Sincerely, Pat

Hi Pat,
None of them seems to have married! Will have a look for Harriet Paxton next, although the IGI baptism for Margaret Ann Paxton doesn't actually say that Harriet was unmarried, just doesn't give a father's name
