Welcome to rootschat Anthony.

If they had children, one of their birth certificates will give her maiden name. This would be your best bet and most reliable.  Smiley

If you have the family in any census, this should tell you where Agnes was born, then you can look for a marriage for George and Agnes on Freebmd, which may help find her maiden name. Couples usually married in the bride's parish. You can also look for possible births for her in the area. There aren't very many marriages on Freebmd between a George Wells and an Agnes, countrywide, within a reasonable time frame. Of course she may have hailed from further afield.  Wink

Tracing the family through the census can sometimes help if there are other relatives living with them.

If you need more help, or census lookups just ask.  Wink

Hi

Looking on Ancestry there is a Frederick Wells marrying in Eastbourne 1874 on the list
of others marrying at the same time is a Agnes Deacon.
I see they had a child called Frederick, so perhaps George is Frederick.
Ref Eastbourne qrt Oct/Dec vol.2b page 123.
Hope it may help.

Alternatively,
you have 4 marriages of a George Wells in Brighton (1867, 1871, 1871 & an 1875 Steyning) none to an Agnes.  A further George Wells marriage was in Brighton in 1878 after the birth of the eldest child.
Was your Agnes marrying under a different name?

The 1881 census shows their eldest child was born around 1875, so unless there were other children before that, we would expect their marriage to be close to that date (but it still may have been outside Brighton).
Can you give us any further clues, like where George was in 1871?  Presumably he was still in Brighton.

By the way that census also suggests slightly earlier years of birth than you have given.  George c 1849,   Agnes  c 1847
