Smugglers in Cornwall
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 06:59 UTC (UK) »

My children's line comes from Germoe, Breage, Falmouth, Tregrehan, Chyvarloe, and I wonder what the chances are that they were smugglers. They appeared to work in tin mines according to the early census.
Their names were Blee, Richards, pper, Singer, Ripper, Kitchen, Carlyon, Beauripper.
Is there any particular place that smugglers were known to have come from, it would be a lovely addition to their history to have some bad boys in it.

A Google search for "Smugglers Cornwall" (without the quotes) found lots of interesting articles on the topic, with lists of names and places.

Thanks for that, I had a peek, and I noticed in one entry that the tin miners were often also smugglers due to their seasonal work, so maybe some lovely illegal history went on in my children's line.

Some quarter sessions records are found on
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/

This is where I found that one of my relatives was discharged from the bridewell after a public whipping, in the mid-1700s. Removals and bastardy cases are also to be found.

Many thanks - I actually found a site where Breage and Germoe are mentioned as being a particularly rife place for smuggling, so I am now able to include that in my children's history.
