Info on John Cattanach b. 1811?
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 22:03 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any leads concerning specific birth/baptism information or parents of John Cattanach, who was born around 1811 in Angus.  He married Janet McIntosh on Feb 9 1840 in Glenisla.  In the 1841 census they were also in the Parish of Glenisla.  They had three children that I am aware of, Mary, Janet, and James.  He died in 1844, shortly after the birth of his last child with Janet, James.  I also believe that Janet the wife was born in Benvie.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi MerRhosyn

The children showing to John C and Janet McIntosh were

Mary - 1840
Janet - 1842
John - 1844

Assuming Scottish naming pattern was used, possible parents for John would be a John and Janet.

There is a couple showing in Glenisla having children in the right time frame on IGI, a John Cattanach and a Janet (maiden name also shows as Cattanach). Can't see a John showing for them but there are gaps:

1. CATENACH Male Christening: 17 JUL 1806 Kirriemuir, Angus
2. DAVID CATENACH   Christening: 09 AUG 1807 Kirriemuir, Angus
3. ANDREW CATENACH  Christening: 26 JAN 1811 Glenisla, Angus
4. ANN CATENACH Christening: 01 OCT 1812 Glenisla, Angus
5. JANET CATENACH Christening: 01 OCT 1812 Glenisla, Angus
6. ANN CATENACH Christening: 25 FEB 1818 Glenisla, Angus

I would imagine that your age for John comes from his 1841 census entry. Bear in mind that ages for that census were normally rounded down to the nearest five years for those over 15 so John could have been born 1807-11.

Thanks Monica!

You are correct, I was estimating the 1811 birth year from the 1841 census.

I see what you mean about the gaps in the christenings btw 1807 and 1811.  I think I was having a bit of trouble with the variations on Cattenach.  Also, most of my records for the third child, son born in 1844 (and my 3x-great grandfather), refer to him at James.  Still new and working to understand how all these names change about so much :-)
