Union Workhouse, Kettering *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 31 July 09 14:41 UTC (UK) »

I hope someone out there can help me?

I have the following ancestor:

Joseph GRAINGER

Showing in the 1901 census as being an "inmate" in the Union Workhouse, London Road.  He died in Mar qtr 1909 in Kettering.

What I would like to know is if he died in the workhouse where would he have been buried and whereabouts in London Road was the workhouse (I travel along it a couple of times a week and cant work out where it could have been!)

Here's in anticipation!

Hi CeroChick.

The workhouse was what is now St Mary's Hospital on the London Road.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ Just type Kettering in the search.

He would more than likely be buried in London Road Cemetery.

You can contact the Kettering Cemetery Office and ask for assistance
with finding the actual location.

My oldest son was born there too in Jan 1977- the maternity hospital was late in opening and didn't start taking patients till Easter 77.

I can well believe that was the workhouse- it hadn't changed much Wink

24 of us to a ward- half post natal and half antenatal-including two girls whose babies had been stillborn- horrible place  Sad

Hi Carol.  Smiley

Cerochick you are welcome.

Luckily I was born when you still had your babies at home,
else it would have been the same place for me.   Sad

My own great grandparents/grand-parents were buried in
London Road having moved to Kettering in the 1890's.
