« on: Friday 31 July 09 15:19 UTC (UK) »

Hi all, i am wondering if anyone can help me please...........My great great uncle was killed by a fall of stone at seaton burn pit on 17th April 1929.  I have his death cert and a copy of a page showing compensation paid to his widow, but i am trying to find some sort of coroners report or an inquest or even something out of a local paper etc....Is there anyone out there that can help me please....His name was Leonard Leigh.

Hi

If you go onto the Durham Mining Museum website at:

http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery

and go into "mines" you will find Seaham Burn pit listed there.  It gives a lot of information about the pit and fatalities etc.

Leonard Leigh is listed as a fatality aged 38 but no other information about the accident or him seems to be available.

It might be worth contacting them to see if they have any additional facts that have not been added as yet.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Newcastle library has the local newspaper 'The Evening Chronicle' on microfilm but you will have to go there and trawl through the few days after his death to see if there is anything about it.
