Hi
I am looking for sks to help me out with finding out what happened to my g-g-aunt Ethel Maud Shambrook. She was born in Caerleon, Monmouthshire on 11.3.1886 to George and Louisa Shambrook. The family had moved to Hereford by 1895.
On the 1901 census she was in service with the Bidmead family in Hereford but after that I can't seem to find her; I can't find a death or marriage and as yet have nothing from the 1911 census. What doesn't help is the name can be bizarrely transcribed
Any help gratefully appreciated!
Rosie

I wonder why 4 out of the 14 Ethel Shambrooks born between 1837 and 1915 had the middle name Maud?
From the 1911 census, have you discounted the Ethel Shambrook with the Le Vesconte family in Cardiff? She appears to have been born in Caerleon in 1886

Oooh, spidermonkey, you star! Had totally missed that - the Le Vescontes are her mother's family so it must be her. That'll teach me for trying to search too close to my bedtime, lol!
Ethel Maud was obviously a trendy name at the time, heavens knows why

Fresh pair of eyes Do you have FMP? Because there appears to be a few Le Vesconte's on the outbound passenger lists.

No I don't - what's FMP? Would be really interested to hear what first names you have as am also doing the Le Vesconte tree!
Thanks, Rosie

FMP is Find My Past - one of the two main subscription sites for census returns etc. When I was looking for Ethel for you last night (not knowing the relationship between her and the Le Vesconte's) I looked to she if she perhaps married one of them, so I looked at the passenger lists and saw several Le V's.
I'll go and get the names of the Le V's from the 1911 census and then cross match with and Le V's on the shipping lists.
Back in a minute.

OK,
Albert (bn 1905) seems to have done the most travelling (on his outward trips he is listed as A Le Visconte, but on his inbound he is registered as Albert): 1929 - Ghana 1931 - Ghana 1932 - Nigeria 1957 - Kenya
Daniel (bn 1911): 1928 - Canada 1946 - USA
E - perhaps Ernest bn 1895 1920 - Canada
Harry (bn 1903): 1924 - Canada
Will post full details (of ships etc) if you want it.
Hope this is of interest to you!

Wow, this is very interesting! As you probably saw, they all brothers, sons of Romulus Horatio (good one, eh?!) and Janet so you are probably right with Ernest.
If there is only a single journey for Ernest and Harry do you think they may have emigrated rather than just visited? Also makes you wonder what Albert was up to, must have had an interesing job!
Would be extremely grateful for the rest of the info if it is not too much.
Thanks again, Rosie
P.S. FMP looks fab, do think its better than Ancestry??

Daniel's trips - the second image wouldn't open for me, so I had to go by what the transcription says which doesn't give as much information.

With regards to Ancestry vs FMP, I'm afraid it's swings and roundabouts. For example, FMP has outbound passenger lists, whilst Ancestry has inbound passenger lists I subscribe to both, which can get a wee bit pricey, but I justify it that since we've had our son, we don't have a social life so the money that would have been spent going out is now spent looking for rellies!
I'm guessing that Harry and Ernest might have emigrated, but I would post a question on the relevant emigration board and see what those clever people can come up with!

Thank you so, so much for all your time and effort
Looks like Daniel was a bit posh, first rellie I have had to travel 1st class!! This gives me a whole new path to follow now, many thanks. (Poor old Ethel can go on the back burner for a while!)
Thought it might be the case that FMP complements rather than replaces Ancestry; will have to think about subscribing. I too don't get out much these days - we have a 16 month old daughter, say no more. It took me months to get back to my family tree after having her as I just didn't have the brain function or memory for it! Thankfully it is slowly returning.......

Our son is 13 months old, so I'm with you on brain function
It's a shame that the passenger list with Daniel on the Queen Elizabeth wouldn't open - it would be interesting to see whether he had put UK as place of last residence or somewhere else.
And as for Albert! Can you imagine what it must have been like as a 24 year old to travel 1st class. Especially as his brothers who had gone to Canada all travelled 3rd.
