Wellgate Dundee - help
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 08:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

One of my ancestors appears to have died at 59 Wellgate Dundee in 1886. As I have no other Dundee connections I have checked to see what was at 59 Wellgate Dundee and all I can find is a photographers!?

Are there any Dundee experts out there that could advise me?

I'm not a Dundee expert but in 1891 there were 124 people staying at 59 Wellgate.

You can view a picture of Wellgate, around 1900 at http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/photodb/wc0683.htm

hi jim  Smiley

in 1881 50+ people were at this address in dundee which as you can see
from the picture that Nel has found would have been a tenement type of
building(shops at street level - flats above)
the 59 wellgate address rang a bell with me. the photographer was Prophet's
and i have family photographs from this studio
this area is long gone and the wellgate shopping centre now stands there
i can remember as a child coming down the hilltown with my mum and gran
shopping as we went  , going down the wellgate steps and on into the centre
of the town
if you could provide a name for your ancestor i could check the 1881 census
to see where they were ? but perhaps you know that already

Thank you both for your help.

After some more research I have found that she had a son living at 59 Wellgate in Dundee in the 1881 census so it makes sense why she would have died there in 1886. In 1881 she was living in Errol which is why I was confused about what 59 Wellgate was. All makes sense now!!

Having been born in Dundee myself I am aware of the new Wellgate area but it was great to see these pics which were taken before it was built.
