Emery, Pembury
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 18:57 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
Does anyone have any information about a John Emery born in Pembury, Kent about 1800. He married a Harriett Kemp born in Wadhurst, Sussex. I cannot find any record of their marriage or of John's birth and would be grateful for any help.
If it helps I know that John and Harriett had the following children:

Hannah    1825
Eliza        1825
Henry        1825
Ephraim    1828
Edwin        24 Jan 1832      Pembury
John        18 Jan 1835        Pembury
Mary Ann    1836
James        1842        Pembury

Many thanks
bripar

Hi Bripar

Doing a search for Harriet EMERY shows the bapisms of these children with a Harriet EMERY as the mother on http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/ which would suggest they were non-conformist.  I wonder if John was non-conformist too - it's difficult to decide and the site appears to be pricey to use so I would tread with caution if you decide to buy some credits - I couldn't immediately see anythiing obvious for him.  Have you searched the actual C of E parish registers for Pembury looking for John's baptism?

Have you tried posting on the Sussex board looking for John and Harriett's marriage just in case they married there?  I only ask because Sussex marriages are generally easier to find.

Hello Bripar,

Have you found out anything further on John Emery & Harriet Kemp.    They are my 4 x great grandparents and I haven't been able to go back any further with either of them.   I'm descended from Edwin.    I couldn't trace any record of the marriage or his birth, I found several possible Harriet Kemp's born in/around the Wadhurst area and wasn't sure which was the correct one.
I see the pair of them on the 1841, 51 and 61 census returns but no later; again there are too many possible deaths to identify the correct ones.
Incidently I also have Morse as a name on my extended family tree; my grandfathers brother married a Welsh lady with that maiden name.

Thank you for any help.

Hello

I am guessing you must be the son or daughter of either Peter, John or Betty. If not its's a massive coincidence that you have the same family names linking you as my wife does.
My wife is daughter of Leslie Emery and Rachel Morse.  Edwin Reginald Emery (born 1909 Brighton) is her uncle (the brother of her father Leslie.
The information I was looking for I eventually obtained by asking Kent Records Office to research it for me.
John Emery was baptised 19 May 1799 in Pembury, Kent.  He married Harriett Kemp who was baptised 2 May 1802. They sent me a copy of the parish record to prove John's baptism.
John Emery's parents were William Emery baptised 1768 Pembury who married Mary Manser. William's parents were John Emery baptised 1723 who married a Mary Farley. I have a lot more information about the children of the marriages. If you have access to Ancestry.com you will see the full tree (Emery/Morse tree). If not let me know and I will be pleased to send you details.
Please let me know if my guess as to who you are is correct.
Regards

Hello Brian,

Thank you for the quick reply, and all the information.
You're right, I'm Paul son of Peter.

Bizarrely, it was only this week when I added Lesley to my tree, my auntie Betty said that Les and Ray had 6 children, but my earlier searches had only found 4.

I'd been stuck at John and Harriet for a long time, it's very pleasing to get this new information.

I've had a quick look at the emery/morse tree on ancestry, and it looks like you've still to populate it with this new info you've got or maybe I was looking at the wrong version/tree.

Thanks again.

Goodness this is good news Smiley

My husband's grandmother was Winifred P Emery sister of Edwin 1881. Brian and I are working together on the Emery's although I must admit he found all the information just described about John and Harriet, as I too had been stuck on them for a very long time.

Hi

Sorry I had forgotten that I had not got around to amending the tree on Ancestry, only on my computer. I have now done this so you should see all of the new information.
I would be interested to add more to my tree. I have Edwin's children as Peter, John and Betty but have no information as to their marriages or children. Would you be able to help. Just out of interest are you still living in the Brighton/Hove area where the family was at the time of Peter, John and Betty's births. We were until last year but now live in the Midlands.

Regards

Hello Brian and hello Evie,

We moved away from Brighton in 1970 and I now live in Rickmansworth.   Betty still lives in the Brighton area and her brother John not too far away he lives in Kent.
I'd be be happy to fill you in with all the names and dates that you might not have.

Edie - I came across one of your postings a while back regarding a postcard from a Master Baldock, i thought the must be a connection but couldn't tie it it together.

Have either of you researched David Bray his daughter married Walter Sebbage and their daughter married Edwin III.   David died in the Steyning union workhouse, Shoreham on 10 May 1886 of chronic bronchitis and exhaustion.   His wife Hannah lived on until 1901, but was claiming to be a widow long before David had died, I'm having trouble locating him on the 1871 census return.
I also only have an approximate DOB for him of c1810 in Ringmer.     My extra interest in him is due to the fact that when the workhouse was closed down, it later reopened as the Southlands hospital, and it was there that I was born in 1962.

Do you think it would be best if I gave you further details direct to your email rather than via this website?

Best wishes
Paul

Hi Paul

I have the marriage of Walter Sebbage to Annie Bray and details of their children and of course the marriage of their daughter Elizabeth Jane Sebbage to Edwin. I dont have any details though of Annie Bray's father David and did not know his name until you mentioned it. I will see what I can find now that I know his name. Like you both my wife and daughter were also born in Southlands.

I agree it would be better to correspond using email addresses.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best Wishes
