Family Tree software for Linux?
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 22:19 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

First post here.
I am using Linux. PCLINUXOS to be exact. Does anyone know of any compatible family history software please. I have tried GRAMPS but didn't like it. I used Family Tree Maker when I used Windows. I  tried it using WINE but it was slightly erratic.

Thanks,

Dave. Smiley

My Heritage Family Tree (Free version) works very well for me in Wine on Ubuntu Hardy Heron. I made life difficult for myself by running the Ubuntu in Virtual Box!

I use PCLINUXOS and the only free Linux software is GRAMPS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GRAMPS

Go into Synaptic and download it from there.  You will probably need to download other libraries such as Python and Gnome.

I did get PAF from familysearch working using WINE but it didn't look and behave the same way as it does in Windows.

You can try running any Windows based program using WINE or some other 'Windows IN Linux' program.  WINE is free but you may have to pay for other Windows/Linux emulators.

I use Redhat and Ubuntu on different machines.

As I had a large amount of PC based software from ages ago I found a great way was to use Wine or Virtual Box to allow me to access PC products like Brothers Keeper.  Virtual Box is the best, with Windows XP as a virtual machine inside Ubuntu.  I run Brothers keeper on that and it is fantastic.

A little late in the day but......

GenealogyJ - cross platform (Java), mature, stable
GWinTree - Minimalistic GUI, fast, useful if limited range of charts/reports

GRAMPS is very similar to RootsMagic in many respects but has probably the best website generator on any platform.

Thanks Paul, Looks worth a look, as I shall have a former XP laptop available for a Linux system when I upgrade to Windows 7.

Hi,

Another vote for Gramps. It is perfectly possible to share a database between linux and windows, I do it all the time. The reports are excellent and has already been pointed out website generation is top notch.

Good support via the forum/mailing list and wiki.

regards

Another vote for Gramps.

The only thing Gramps is missing IMHO is an 'all in one' chart or better still an all in one interactive view, either or both of which would make it second to none.

I like the idea of running XP as a virtual machine inside Ubuntu, must try that when I go for Windows 7 and have a spare machine available.
