Hello
It looks like your William Chuter is connected to James Chuter Ede, a leading UK politician in the 1940s-1950s. He died here in Epsom, Surrey UK in 1965 as Lord Chuter-Ede. His grandparents were James Chuter born about 1823 in Farnham, Surrey and Ann Hannah Clark born about 1822 in Hobart, Tasmania. They married in Epsom in 1848 and are buried here. James Chuter was the son of Stephen Chuter of Farnham. I am trying to expand this info and will let you know what i come up with.

Hi, I also have Chuter ancesters (in Farnham) so this is of interest to me. According to the local newspaper (via the British Library collection)
At this Sessions no less than four persons were Transported for Life for sheep-stealing, viz. George Bulpit, for stealing a horn-sheep from Henry Stainer, of Eling; and three brothers of the names of Stephen, Benjamin, and William Chuter, for stealing a wether from afield in the parish of Kingsley, the property of Mrs. Ann Hoare. In the latter case, the aged father, Stephen Chuter, the elder, was also sentenced to be transported for seven years, for having received several joints of the said sheep, knowing it to have been stolen.
Hampshire Telegraph & Sussex Chronicle Mon October 26 1835
And on Mon Nov 9 (same paper):
The following convicts have been removed during the week on board the York hulk, in Portsmouth harbour; George Bulpit, Stephen Chuter, sen. Benjamin Chuter, Wm. Chuter, Geo. Blake, and Stephen Chuter, jun.
William was 24 on conviction which would mean he was born around 1810/11 - the only baptism in Frensham would be a William son of James& Sarah who was baptised 20/10/1810 aged 8 days. I can't see a baptism for a William son of Stephen & Sarah! (Baptisms from WSFHS transcriptions)
It doesn't look quite so likely to have been William the son of William & Elizabeth though! He was about a year older (baptised 1/10/1809 aged 22 days).

Stephen and Sarah Chuter had a son Richard baptised in Elstead (adjoining Frensham) in 1814. So possibly William was bapt in Elstead - I have not yet been able to check baptisms in Elstead prior to 1813.

Thank you both for all of this information which is most interesting. They certainly got heavy sentences for stealing a sheep and eating it didn't they. Wonder if they were just hungry! That poor wife, sending her husband and her sons off to the other side of the world.
I wonder, since the bap of a William to Stephen and Sarah eludes us, could the press of the day have assumed the three were brothers when in fact William may have been their cousin. We all know how reliable today's papers are!!! I have looked on the IGI and haven't been able to find a William to Stephen and Sarah bap anywhere. Perhaps, with local knowledge, you will have more luck.
I can't find the marriage for Wm senior and Elizabeth Hammond either.
Once again, thanks for your interest. Marie

During the 18th century there are several instances of members of the HAMMOND family marrying members of the CHEWTER/CHUTER family in the Windlesham area of Surrey. Chuter is an unusual name and Frensham is only a few miles away so it is quite possible that your couple are part of these families. David Hammond has done a lot of research and built up an impressive tree of the extended family and may be able to help you. His website, which contains a link so you can contact him, is at http://freespace.virgin.net/david.hammond1/welcome.htm.
Good luck
Peter

I have just started researching my mothers family (Chuter). They also came from Frensham.
My great great grandfather was Samuel Chuter (born 1817) married to Hannah (he spent a year in jail for sheep stealing) and his father was James Chuter (born 1783) married to Sarah.
That's as far as I've managed to get so far. I would be very interested to know if these are relations of yours too.
