Crighton - Edentrillick/Hillsborough - Pre 1850
« on: Monday 03 August 09 19:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi!

I was hoping that someone might be able to help me in my search!

I've traced my family history back to Co.Down and I'm now struggling to trace them and wondered if anyone had come accross the name or results in their searches?

I have found my G.G.Grandfather a John Crighton in Port Glasgow, Scotland aged 17 in 1851. He was living at this time with his Uncle a Robert Crighton.

John would have been born in 1934/35 and his census records show Co.Down.

I have traced Robert's marriage to a Rachel Gardiner in 1843 at Edentrillick and believe that Robert was born in 1815 and he had two sisters Mary-Ann and Marriane.

John's father was listed as a James Crighton, Labourer and mother a Mary Johnston and Mary Crighton (nee Johnston) was born c.1794

Some of the kind people in the Renfrewshire forum have helped me with the Scottish links but I'm struggling with the Irish side and I can't find so much info - the thread can be found here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,395849.0.html

Many thanks in advance Smiley

Are you sure these are two sisters?- Mary Ann, Marion, Marian, Marianne usually all forms of the same name.

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I agree, I thought it was strange to have to names so similar - perhaps it was just the one child - or one died in infancy?

This is the record I was given by one the people in the renfrewshire forum:

"This is another submitted entry - John was b County down and Uncle Robert was b 1815 and his mother was Mary

Robert Creighton   Birth:  20 JAN 1815   Edentrillick, Hillsborough, Down

Father:  William Creighton   Mother:  Mary Johnston

In the same place and to the same parents are the following submitted entries

Marianne b 3.8.1817
Maryann b 26.11.1818"

By 'parish records' do you mean for the area or Church of Ireland/Roman Catholic records?
Here's a link showing churches in Co. Down-
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/CHURCHES/A-I.htm
You would need to know what religion the family were then see if the records exist and if they are online (not many are), available at PRONI, Belfast or through your local LDS library (check online catalogue at www.familysearch.org).

There are lots of Creightons listed in this part of Ros Davies' site as well-
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/C/CreCri.htm

Some of the Creighton records in IGI (www.familysearch.org) are submitted but there are extracted ones as well- if you check the extracted ones, under "source call no." it should give information about film number, etc. which you should be able to order from your local LDS library for a small fee if they don't have it in stock.

Having looked through the IGI records I found a

Mary Johnston marrying a William Crickleton (Creighton) in 1813 at Dromore, Co.Down.

Mary is shown as being born in Dromore in 1792 and christened in Drumbo?, Co.Down 10 Sept 1792.

I've also found a record for William Creighton being born in Dromore in 1789 which would seem to fit.

I can't however find any link to James Creighton (my g.g.g.grandfather) who is listed as the father of my g.g.grandfather (who was living with Robert Creighton in Port Glasgow in 1851 and is listed as his Nephew - and I can trace that Robert back to Edentrillick).

Tim, If you go on to
www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com
Go to Dromore Parish
click Tithe applotments
you will see a James Creighton listed there.
There is also a lot of other information on Dromore Parish
Good luck

My great-grandfather (George McCreedy) lived in Edentrillick and married Mary Hamilton from the adjoining village of Clogher in 1851 at Hillsborough Parish Church (Church of Ireland). I found the record of marriage with help from the LDS, on  document they had on microfilm.

Hi

I am also looking for Crightons- specifically the origin of Robert Crighton, grocer of Port Glasgow, so the OP caught my eye. Robert died leaving 3 young children in 1828. The burial records are lost and he had no memorial stone. From the posts I wonder if he came from Ireland? I suppose he might have been around 35 when he died- he married in 1818. Do you have any Robert Crightons that might fit?

Clare
