Kilmoremoy Births
« on: Monday 03 August 09 23:37 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for information on William Anderson born 1880 at Kilmoremoy. I have very little information on this side of my family all I have on William are his service records from 1919 and the fact that he married Elizabeth Broderick. Can anyone help?
Would be very much appreciated.  Smiley

Welcome to Rootschat. Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there should be a birth certificate for your William Anderson. Any idea of his parents' names? do you have an exact date of birth? and do you know where and when he died?

Kilmoremoy is the name of both a townland and parish in Co. Mayo- Poor Law Union is Ballina (this is what will appear as registration district). Index to civil registrations (link below) shows several William Andersons born around 1880 (includng one died 1953 age 74 (born c1879) which may be the birth registered Apr./June 1879)).
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

The IGI (www.familysearch.org) has some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882- there's a William born 1877 Co. Mayo (parents James and Bridget) but if you search for all counties (instead of just Mayo) it gives lots more results listing birthplace as just 'Ireland' so if you know the parents' names you can try searching there.

Hello Melly,
Do you know where and when William married?

If you search the Family Search Pilot site that aghadowey gave you for  marriages - there is one 1919 for William Anderson and one for Elizabeth Broderick which has the same reference. It would mean that William would be 39 yrs or so at the time of his marriage.

If you think that this is your William, you could send for the marriage certificate which would give you the names of the couple's fathers.

http://www.groireland.ie/  gives you details of applications.

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/
gives access to the 1901 census for Mayo. I have had a quick look and there are entries for Andersons in Kilmoremoy parish but not William Anderson. Perhaps some of the names may ring a bell.
There is only one William Anderson who I can see and he is a 20 yr old (would fit) farm servant in Drumnanangle townland working for a Kelly family. I found him by searching for 'others enumerated in household'

There is also an Elizabeth Broderick aged 6 months in Ballina - she could be of an age to marry in 1919.

These are just suggestions but I hope they are useful.

best wishes

Thankyou thankyou thankyou Heywood!
I had a look at the marriage that you suggested and it has to be the one, although a little confused as I have the baptism cert of my Grandad which states that his parents William Anderson and Elizabeth Broderick were legally married but he was baptised in 1912 and their marriage wasn't until 1919?!? But as my Grandad was baptised in Govan, Glasgow (due to his Father being in the Connaught Rangers) I guess they could have lied about being married I just thought as they were Catholic it wasn't the done thing! I can't see though that there would be another William Anderson who married an Elizabeth Broderick in Ballina so it has to be the one. So I feel like I am making some progress FINALLY!
Thanks again

Hi again,
I would certainly check it but as you say it does seem odd.
We have relatives who emigrated to England and didn't marry for a couple of years- having two children in the intervening time - very strong Catholics so it does happen and in your case, there were other factors for a soldier.
Does his army record give any clues?
Additionally, Elizabeth Broderick from the census can't be the right one as she was only a baby in 1901.
Where did they live after his discharge?
The more I am writing this, the more concerns I have but it is still perhaps worth following if only to eliminate that couple.

good luck- please keep us posted if there is a development
