Miller
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 12:59 UTC (UK) »

I have just started researching the Miller's of Durham. At the moment I am stuck.
Is their anybody that can tell me the parents of:

WILLIAM MILLER (1850) He married MAHALA CAWLEY in 1875. On the marriage certificate it states that his father was JAMES.

I have found a JAMES who married ELIZABETH LUMLEY in 1847 but I really would like someone to clarify that this is right or wrong, or should I keep searching.

Hope there is someone that can help.

Regards

In 1891, theres a sister Mary Miller, aged 18, living with William and Mahala so I'll trace this family and see if a Mary turns up!

Elizabeth Lumley seems like the right spouse, but a birth certificate should prove it.

Thank you both for replying.

With this info I have now, can I be sure that WILIAM's parents were JAMES & ELIZABETH LUMLEY as I first thought?

Its looking pretty likely but the only way to be absolutely sure is to get a certificate.....

This looks a good candidate for Elizabeth Lumley in 1841 -

Stephen Lumley 60 Wool Comber j Y
Nancy 15 Y
Thomas 15 Printer App Y
Elizabeth 12 Y
Stephen 8 Y
Mary 5 Y

I have just received 2 certificates for my MILLER search
The first one is a birth for WILLIAM (1850) born to parents JAMES & ELIZABETH LUMLEY.
2nd one is the marriage of JAMES MILLER & ELIZABETH LUMLEY in 1847 in NEW SHINCLIFFE.
It states on the marriage cert that they are "full age". Would that mean over 21?
Can I now presume that I am dealing with the correct line for my MILLER search?

Hi Dot

Congratulations on getting the certificates. I would be more than happy that it confirms your research. Of full age would suggest 21 or over. My take on full age is that parental consent was not needed at the time of marriage without giving the exact age, of course they could have lied.

Gary

Thanks for replying.
At the moment I am trying to find JAMES parents THOMAS & HANNAH.
If I am correct with this, THOMAS was born in STAINMORE, WESTMORLAND and HANNAH was born HULL, YORKSHIRE.
I am wondering why they moved to Durham and how did they meet. I find this ancestry searching very interesting.
Again, thanks for your help.

I wonder if I could ask for more help on my MILLER search please?

If my thinking is correct and THOMAS & HANNAH are JAMES parents is there anyway I can find a marriage certificate for these two just to make sure.

In my search I did find a HANNAH HOTHAM born in HULL 1783 parents THOMAS & SARAH, and wondered if this could be "my Hannah".

Hope someone can help or give me advice please.

Gary

I did ask advice regardng this birth of JAMES in my other posts. It was presumed that I was on the correct line. Now I am not so sure.
These seem to match up with my search. I could'nt find any other family that might be correct. What do you think?

Rosie

What details do you require off these certs please. I do not have them here at the moment but I can get them.
