Hi Dot
James marriage certificate should give his fathers name and occupation. If his father is Thomas then you would need to search for james birth in the Bishops Transcripts ( not an easy task unless you know the exact parish, Durham City has a few). When I get a wee bit of time Iwill look for him.

September 11th 1847 Parish of Shincliffe, Durham the marriage of

JAMES MILLER (batchelor) and ELIZABETH LUMLEY (spinster) both of full age

Father THOMAS MILLER (Gardner) Father STEPHEN LUMLEY (Wool Comber)

Witnesses: JAMES DOUGLAS & THOMAS LUMLEY

17th March 1850, St Nicholas & Lanchester

Birth of WILLIAM MILLER, Lodge Hill, St Giles

Father JAMES MILLER (Pitman) Mother Elizabeth Miller (Formally LUMLEY)

I found a JAMES MILLER (1826) on find my past 1841 census with parents THOMAS & HANNAH. Whether this is correct, I am not sure now. The dob is not consistent with other census records.

On checking JAMES on the 1851-1871 census when he was married to ELIZABETH LUMLEY his dob ranges from 1816-1823.
Maybe I do have it wrong.

If there is anymore info that you require, please let me know.

Please help if you can. It is much appreciated.

Regards

Dot

Still not sure if this is my JAMES  Undecided. But thanks again for your help in my search.
Could this be the family or not, I wonder.

In 1841 ages above 15 were generally rounded down to the nearest 5 so 20 could mean up to 24 etc.

Andrea

Thanks for that. So could this be my JAMES after all?

Gary

It will not let me access St Giles transcript, so I cannot view it yet.
Is there anything I can do.

Dot

If you click on the link I gave you it should open the transcripts for St Giles it will say image currently unavailable, ignore this. At the bottom of the page you will see goto image clear the contents of that box and enter 151 then click go that should take you to the image I mentioned. If you still can't see the image PM me with your email and I will send you a copy.

Dot,

I just tested the link that Gary sent, and it does definitely work, but it takes quite a long time to load - do try it again and wait quite a long time for something to happen!

Hi Jennifer
Thanks for testing the link. I must be lucky of late, the BTs have been loading really fast.

Dot I have trawled backwards to 1800 and there is only one other Miller entry in either baptized or married, and that was for a marriage for an Alexander Miller native of Durham. It would seem that Thomas & Hannah were married elswhere.

Thanks Jennifer & Gary.

I can now view St Giles, thanks for the advice.

Gary, can I now presume that THOMAS & HANNAH were JAMES parents, or do I still keep looking?

Again your help is much appreciated.

Hi Dot

Having looked at all the evidence you have from the certificates + information from the census I would be 99% sure.
The BTs  bear out the information given on the census.  If It was my family I would be checking the neighboring Durham parishes to check for any possible Millers around the time of the ones in St Giles.
As for the marriage of Thomas & Hannah well again I would check other Durham parishes, but It seems they could have been married out of the county and I can't find anything close in the IGI.
Hopefully some other eagle eyed RootsChatter may come across something that can help.

Gary

Added: Dot just food for thought,
I looked for the census entries for Isaac Miller b 1815 in Durham, none found, however there are 2 born around that time in yorkshire residing in durham.
From the 1851 census.
1. Isaac Miller b 1815. born in whitby. IGI shows parents as Thomas & Hannah?
and this one is prehaps the most interesting.
2. Isaac Miller b 1813 in Barton le street. occupation Gardener. can't find an IGI entry for this one.

Gary

Yes, I will check all parishes for any other link. I am really grateful for the help you have given me.
I will presume the info I have is correct, unless anything comes up with searching and will certainly check on Issac.
Without Rootschat I wouldn't have had all this.
Thanks again
