Burial in Porthmadog cemetery
« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 19:46 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have just been given some information relating to the burial of one of my ancestors but I don't know who!!!  It is to do with the Evans family but not sure which one.

Some papers have been discovered and amongst them is a reference to a burial in Porthmadog cemetery, plot 222 in 1947.

Does anyone know if and how I could contact the cemetery and find out who is buried there?

Alternatively, if anyone lives close by and has the time to take a photo I would be eternally grateful Cheesy

Many thanks in advance.

Have just rung the local council who have put a cemetery query into their system for the cemetery in Porthmadog - hopefully they will come back to me with the details of who has been buried there - if they can also tell me where the grave is I will also go over and take a picture for you - depending on accessibility........of course.  There is nothing I like more than traipsing around an interesting cemetery (well as long as its a sunny evening)    Cheesy

Hi Nesta

Thank you so much for your help - I really do appreciate it.

Its very frustrating for me - I have just come back from holiday in Wales and visited Porthmadog but though my relatives would be buried in Morfa Bychan or Borth Y Gest and spent my time looking (without success) for cemeteries in that area.

It wasnt until we came home that the new information came to light - I would have loved to spend time looking round the cemetery as I suspect several more of my Evans' are buried there Cheesy

Thank you once again for your help

Success .....

The grave is for a Jane Catherine Evans buried on 27/1/1946
also John Evans 20/11/1957
also William Morris Evans 20/02/1974

The other info in the Plot register is that Plot 222 is in consecrated ground (some of the cemetery isn't) Entry in Purchase of graves register 982 and numbers in the burial register are 3098 7-4 ; 3372 20-4 ; 3610 32-4.

As you enter the cemetery walk up the central path and take the second path on the right the graves are quite visible from the crossroads - 7 plots in.

By the way the grave seems well cared for.........it has those plastic flowers you see now but they seem relatively new.

The inscriptions read

Er Serchus Cof am Jane Catherine Evans, Penrhiw, Morfa Bychan  Yr hon a hunodd Rhagfyr 24 1946 yn 57 ml oed

O ein Mam ymhle a ydwy
O ni allan weld dy wedd
Annwyl blant rwyf heediwn ddedwydd
Gydag harglwydd yn y nef

Hefyd ei phriod
John Evans a hunodd Tachwedd 18 1957 yn 70 ml oed

Hefyd eu mab William Morris Evans a hunodd Rhagfyr 16 1973 yn 50ml oed.

I don't know what your welsh is like but a rough translation would read

In loving memory of JCE who died Dec 24 1946 aged 57
also her husband (spouse) JE who died November 18 1957 aged 70 years
Also their son WME who died Dec 16 1973 aged 50

I'm sorry I'm not up to translating the verse.

I don't know if they are connected but I have noted it down anyway - just two graves away from the above were the following family

Elizabeth J Evans wife of R M Evans of 51 East Avenue died Sept 18 1949 aged 68 and also her husband Richard Morris Evans who died March 25 1959 aged 79 years.

The "Morris Evans" leapt out at me! This grave is not as well cared for !

I have some pictures also if you pm your email address I will email them to you.

Hi Nesta

I really cant thank you enough - this is fantastic information - I did suspect that Jane Catherine was buried here, but it was purely a guess.  Our Welsh connection is one we know little about and in the last week I have learned so much.

My Welsh is absolutely non existant so if anyone else is able to translate the verse for me, that would be great.

I am also intrigued by the fact that the grave appears cared for - as far as we were concerned we knew of no other family left in Wales but looks like there's someone - another mystery to investigate Cheesy

I will send you a pm with my e-mail address - I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Thank you once again for such generosity with your time - I really do appreciate the time and effort you have gone to, to help me - as do my family who will be absolutely amazed by so much information.

Hi Anne-Marie,
As Nesta was so obliging I feel I must provide a version of the verse: (I am guessing at some of the transliteration)
O our Mother, where is she?
O that we could see your face.
Dear children, today I am happy,
                 With our Lord, in heaven.

Hey Anne-Marie

No problem - I had a lovely time really; saw an old workmate which I hadn't seen for years at the council offices and then had a lovely time wandering around the cemetery.  I will email you the pictures as soon as I swop PC's.  Jane Catherine's grave was definitely cared for - no weeds or anything, the other was not.  Thanks Pinot for the verse translation - I knew what it was saying but couldn't do a proper translation - embarassing I know for someone who went to school in Porthmadog !!

Anything else you need just give me a buzz and I'll see what I can do !

Hi

Said I'd be back Cheesy Cheesy

I am really progressing with my Evans tree now but the information Nesta has provided has got me wondering who it is that tends this grave.  I would guess it is probably a relation of William Morris Evans.

Not being local, I'm wondering if you can point me in the right direction.  Is there a local newspaper I could contact - I would like to try and contact relatives of William and cannot think of any other way of doing this - or alternatively perhaps a local forum?

Hi

local newspapers there are two - http://www.caernarfonherald.co.uk local office in Porthmadog and the Cambrian News again an office in Porthmadog sorry I can't find a website but if you google it.......it should come up...

Local Family history society is http://chtg.gwis.co.uk/

There is a local welsh language paper produced in the area; this is very grass roots, produced and published by local volunteers, try contacting Geraint Lloyd Jones, Llwyn Hudol, Penrhyndeudraeth (01766 770745 who is listed as the Secretary of the committee....these grass roots papers are really read by the local families - if you know what I mean.

Hope you can get further along - have you looked for a marriage for William Morris Evans ?  Dying at 50 yrs old in 1973 could mean that his spouse and children are still alive

Hi Nesta

To my rescue again Cheesy

I'll have a look at the links you sent.  The idea of contacting the local welsh language paper sounds good, I will also give that a try.

I will also have a look for a marriage for William - did try yesterday without much luck but it was getting late and I was tired so I probably wasn't being particularly thorough.

Thanks again for your help

Hi
I might have some information that might be of help. I won't go to much detail without first knowing roughly what information you have obtained since last posting. The evidence from the grave records seem conclusive that the person you are interested is John Evans, Penrhiw, or Jack Penrhiw as he was known. I know the family and that there are ancestors still living in the area. Don't know exact address, but could easily find out.
I have details of persons living in Penrhiw from 1901 back to 1851 censuses.
1901
Robert Evans - Head - 53 - born Llangian
Catherine Evans - Wife - 52 - born Abererch
John Evans - Son - 2- born Ynyscynhaearn
1891
Same - but ages  44/42/2
1881 - Some confusion from here back.
If you want info on living descendents can you pm your e-mail address to me. Because I haven't made 3 postings I'm unable to send a PM
