Hi Wendy
Many thanks for your brilliant and fast response!
I've spent around £25 on the 1901 and 1911 censuses, only to get thoroughly confused.
My only remaining question is how would Jane Roberts, who was allegedly in service with the "Rays" of Birkenhead, meet Ambrose Hill who was a miner from Pontypridd?
They married in Birkenhead 1925 but, after the birth of their first child 1926, moved to Ambrose's family home of Pontypridd. Any suggestions?
Thanks again for you invaluable assistance.
Kind regards
Chris

Hi tontegchris
Ambrose being a miner could have gone there to work in the mines.
Lots of miners moved around the country following the work. Some interesting sites if you're interested.

Since the 1921 census the population of Pontypridd has been in continual decline. The decline was particularly marked during the 20s and 30s. The town like many others in south Wales between the wars suffered from its dependence on coal. By 1929 south Wales, which had once supplied almost a third of the world's output of coal, now produced less than 3 per cent.
