Workhouse records
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 11:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Unfortunately my surname is Smith, not that I'm unhappy with the name it's this bloomin searching mullarky gets difficult. Anyway I live in the North West and great news after 6 years of searching I've located my Grandfather Joseph William from Grove Street Heath Town born 1859.

Now for another six years, his Father also Joseph disapeared between 61 and 71 censuses. Apparently there was a Joseph died in the Heath Town workhouse in 65.

Can anyone give me a steer regarding records or any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Colin

Hi Colin,
This is the site for workhouses
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
Heath Town appears to be listed under Wolverhampton - there are several pictures & maps. I also found this
http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/england/staffs/wolverhampton_workhouse.htm
with a link to Wolverhampton Archives, suggesting that is where records may now be, if any remain.

Cheers mshrmh,

I like the sites they certainly set the scene with a good scematic of the New Cross Union.

I have corresponded with Wolverhampton archives and unfortunately they only have corporate records and the records of inmates are either lost or stolen.

Thanks for your advise

Just a thought, my gt grandfather was born in the Trysull and Seisdon Union Workhouse, which 'serviced' a big area including Codsall and Tettenhall in around 1860. I wanted to find out more from this institution's records, and was advised by Wolverhampton Archives to visit the Stafford
Records Office, where all the records are kept. Hope this may help, I haven't visited there yet, so don't know what details the records show.
