Campany's Farm, Higham, - Completed
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 14:24 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

In the 1851 census my 3x great grandfather was a laborer living at Higham Lodge and in the 1881 census he was a bailiff living at Campany's Farm -  both in the Salehurst area.

I presume the lodge and the farm are two different places, and I suspect they are close to each other.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Jann

I found a building called Lodge near the entrance to a property called Higham in Salehurst on Old Maps.   It is now called Higham House and still there today.

I've not managed to find Campanys Farm though yet.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks much for checking.  Can you tell me which "old maps" site shows Higham?  I found several Salehurst maps on Google but nothing that showed much detail.

I have a picture of my great grandfather and his 2nd wife standing in front of their home.  Don't know when it was taken.  The home seems to be more of a cottage than a "lodge" and appears to be on a road.

Hi Jann

www.old-maps.co.uk/ which is a really useful site except you can no longer download maps you have to buy them.  But for looking up somewhere its excellent.

Looking back to 1785 in the East Sussex Land Tax records the following information can be found

Salehurst Borough

Owner: John Pooke, gent
Occupier: Himself
Lands: Late Campanys

Owner: Samuel Boys, esq
Occupier: Mr Robert Dunk
Lands: Higham

Sean,

Thanks much for the look-up.  Do you have any clue what "Late Campanys" means.

I've found a John Campany family (Father John was born in 1711 and son in 1753 )                               living in Salehurst,Kent  Huh  Is that right across the border from Salehurst, Sussex? Would it be the same land, do you think?

I am assuming that "late Campanys" means that a Campany family owned it at one point and then either died or moved away.
I imagine it would be the same place Salehurst Kent/Sussex, it is on the border. There were three different areas of Salehurst in the records; Iridge Borough, Salehurst Borough and Robertsbridge Borough.
Aha, just found a John Company in Salehurst in the records noted just after John Pooke, so perhaps he sold it?

Higham House appears in the post office directory 1871 with the occupier names as Rev George C Luxford and in 1851 with Mrs Cath. Sarah Luxford as the occupier. For it to be listed suggests that it was a place of some importance.

Sean,

Thanks x2!  I am spending some time finding out more about how my ancestors lived and I'm particularly interested in the people they worked for (in case similar types show up on Masterpiece Theater Grin Grin)

The Luxfords looking promising for a follow up.  And I know now that my grandfather did not work for a man named Campany.  Strange that the land/farm was known by same name more than 100 years after the Campany family sold it.

Regards,
