Jane Carver
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 17:34 UTC (UK) »

Hello All!
I have a death certificate for a Jane Carver who died in 1878 at the Sussex Lunatic Asylum. I would love to find out more about this. Do you know where I can get more info about the place. Also where might she be buried? She came from Petworth before she was here I think.
Any advice is greatly appreciated....I am a little new to all this!

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
Which registration district is the death in?   If it is Cuckfield then this will probably be the asylum just outside Haywards Heath which became known as St Francis Hospital.  It is now converted into flats but is an imposing building which can be seen from some distance away.  As it happens there is an article about it in the local paper today.   www.midsussextimes.co.uk

Actually that will be the correct area I suspect as the Asylum is on the Ditchling side of Haywards Heath.   She could be buried anywhere though - would her family have claimed her?

I really have no idea whether her family would have claimed her. I don't know why she was there. She was married and had several children and was previously living in Petworth. Maybe that should be my starting point?

Sadly they were in asylums for all sorts of reasons that we would not consider worthy of such treatment today.  Post natal depression being one.  How old were her kids?  You may be able to see the details on the admission record if you contact Lewes record office.  I think they will be there though they may be at Chichester - the change of county boundaries makes these things a bit of a lottery.
Have you got the census records for the family in Petworth?

I have census records that show she was in Petworth in 1871 but then isnt on later ones. She did have a number of children and i think she had a young one in 1871 record. I would love to find out more so will maybe find out where the records from the asylum are. Think possibly Lewes?
