"Traveller"

According to my grandfathers birth certificate his father's occupation was a "Traveller" - what exactly would a traveller do?

Hi Elaine

There were two really quite different travellers:

a) A commercial traveller much like we would recognise a sales rep today

b) Traveller as in Gypsy/itinerant worker leading a nomadic lifestyle with no usual fixed abode

Perhaps you have further clues or some idea of which would be more fitting for your ancestor

Best wishes

Thank you again for your invaluable assistance.  I think the first traveller description seems to fit better with the other information I have on him.

Many thanks
