42 Calder Rd Ravensthorpe 1920 info Please
« on: Friday 07 August 09 11:27 UTC (UK) »

I have obtained a birth cert for Nellie Marjorie NELLIS 6th June 1919 at 42 Calder Road , Ravensthorpe Dewsbury.
Mum is Laura Alice Nellis formerly Jordan.
Father is James Nellis, Railway signal man of 13 Cross Park St, Horbury. He registered the birth.
Please can anyone tell me if 42 Calder Rd was a ordinary house or hospital or something?
Also why dad would have a different address?
This Girl died aged 7. Their address then was 31 Wilson Ave, Mirfield.
Once again registered by Dad.
James and Laura Alice give the address of Oakland View, Calder Rd on their marriage cert in 1908.
Is it the same as Number 42?
Please can anyone tell me more about these three/Four  Addresses or the family.

Hi Frithy
Calder Road Ravensthorpe still exists not sure about Number 42 but  I don't think there were and major demolitions so it could still be there the houses on
Calder Rd are Terraced Houses no Hospitals in the area. I am not sure if Oakland View is the same address but a few houses there do have names above them.Wilson Avenue Mirfield is also still there . Its up the Nettleton Rd Area of Mirfield  The Houses in  Wilson Ave were council houses. Interestingley
Just at the top of Calder Rd is Ravensthorpe Railway station. and Wilson Ave is not far from what was Battyford Railway station Demolished years ago. These stations could have been where you'r Relly worked.?

Thank You for this info. I looked up todays map with directions from Calder Rd to Wilson  Ave by car.
When you view you can see the railway line runs across. So I think he may have worked at the next station down the line.
I can feel a train trip comming on.
Maybe he had to take lodgings?
Number 46 Calder rd shows up in the for sale adds on google.
At present I'm awaiting Laura Alices death cert in 1969. So this may show if James was still alive then.

Hi...
I live about 5 mins from Calder Road, they are typical early late 19th early 20th century terraced houses possibly back to back at one time?
I have to say there is not an awfull lot to see there. 42 does exist as there have ben no demolitions of the houses in the past. It runs from the junction of Huddersfield Road to Netherfield Road and on the left hand side has the mill belonging to JH Walker. From Netherfield Rd it is all industrial with a brises block factory and the remains of the Ravensthorpe Power Station ( the ashe from which was used to make the blocks across the road.
Calder Road finishes where it crosses the trans-pennine railway line after crossing the river Calder.

If you require any pictures I will gladly do them for you, however if you got to
http://www.kirkleesimages.org.uk/

you will find old pictures of Ravensthorpe.

Very often births took place at the home of a relative who was 'skilled at midwifry' i.e. they had given birth themselves or been present at a birth. Consider also that a proper midwife might have lived at number 42.
In my wifes family until about 40 years ago, close family births all took place at an address we laughingly call the family birthing home. Grandma lived there.
