Swaniestown, Ayrshire
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 01:39 UTC (UK) »

Another mystery.  I traced my ancestry back to one Malcolm Baxter and Mary Baxter "in Craigenloch(?) who had their banns called May 11th 1771 and their marriage performed May 27 or 29, 1771 in Kilmacolm.  There is a note below the entry which says that the said Malcolm Baxter is from Houston, originally born in Swanieston halfway from Peter's Well to Barochan Mill.  At least that is what the handwriting seems to say.  I did find Swaniestown on an ordinance survey map but it appears to be one building.  Does anyone know what was on the site of Swaniestown?  Was it a village, or a farm?  I did find it amusing that the clerk had to put down in his notes that this person was an obvious outdweller from a couple of miles away.

There is still a Barochan Mill Farm, Barochan Rd, Houston in the outskirts of Houston on the road to Langbank, Renfrewshire  Near it is Barochan House.  Don't know about Peters Well but will keep searching.  If you search on google map you will find it.

Thanks for the reply.  I just realized I should have posted this on the Renfrew list but I was head's deep into Beith, Ayr when I posted.

As Liz, stated when you leave Houston, Old Village, driving up Mains Street, you then enter Barochan Road, just after leaving Houston, there is a Peter's Burn, which runs across and under Barochan Road, and through Greenhill, where St. Peter's Well, was situated. as you carry on down Barochan Road, for about half a mile thats where Swanieston, was situated, its all fields and farms between Houston, and Langbank, and the only house that is near to where Swanieston, was back then is a small cottage no more than Sixty years old.

Regards
Jonn.

Thank you so much, Jonn.
I'll have to delve into what Swaniestown was whether a farmtoon or an actually village.  Thanks for the help again.

We have an extensive mapping system at work and found the following (long night nightshift)
Swanieston (a house) sits on the right on Barochan Rd, Houston between Barochan Rd and Chapel Rd with Barochan House to the right of Swanieston.  Before Swanieston sits Greenhill Farm on the same road and to the rear  of that is Peters Well at the Peter burn.
Checked on google earth and they are both there if you search under Greenhill Farm Barochan Road Houston and Swanieston, Houston.  If you type in Peterswell it takes you to Greenhill Farm.  On the map at work it shows as
Peter's Well to the rear of the farm.
Hope this is of help
Liz
PS Next time I drive that road I will be more observant of the houses I drive passed.
PPS Jonn just realised I am reiterating what you have already posted.   Never mind
it helped pass a nightshift!
