McGuffle or McGuffie
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 07:36 UTC (UK) »

I had a great aunt whose name was Yvonne( McGuffle or McGuffie) Fowler.
I believe her middle name may well have been her maiden name.
She was married to David Fowler, who worked for a number ofyears in
marketing, for Texaco oil.  He died aged 92 in 1989.
Yvonne died in June, 1975 in Toronto, where, I suspect they were married.
They are both interred in Resthaven Memorial Park, Scarborough.  Also there is
David's father, Samuel.
As far as I am aware there were no children of the marriage and I am trying to
establish a link with Yvonne's family.
Should her second name be her maiden name, then someone may recognise it,
as it is unusual.
Thank you.

Haven't found anything as yet, other than a lot of McGuffie...so that may be the name....was she born a lot later than david, as haven't found her on census as yet...and am wondering if I'm spinning wheels...
In case you haven't seen this, could this be your David's attestation papers for WW1?
An Alexander David Crawford Proudfoot Fowler ...Father Samuel davidson Fowler...27 Dupont St. Toronto...
 Born Feb 3rd 1897...single in 1916

I have no idea how I just knew that was your rellie...but I see now that it is and the mother's name is Gracie Proudfoot. Perhaps we had discussed his wife's name in an earlier search & I'd remembered...?
Don't see a birth or census entry for an Yvonne....if she was born after 1909 ( births are available to 1912 in Ontario, but they aren't all transcribed...
In case it turns out to be her ancestor...The first McGuffie showing on the 1881 census is a a homechild James born 1869 England, who arrived 1880...and other McGuffie seemed to immigrate from Barbados but aren't transcribed as such...
Then we have this Walter (knight) Guffrie in Toronto son of Walter McGuffrie & Marion Bender/Binder......(so possible marriage on freeBMD looks to be a Walter Daniel McGuffie & Marian Binden/ Kenley, unless married in Ireland or Scotland?) http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=104644&highlight=18
also Henry Dugall McGuffie & Milicent Taylor are still having wee ones...http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=50774&highlight=43

Which doesn't really help you at all at this stage...plus Yvonne may have been a middle name...
I have looked for Yvonnes married to surname Fowler on the BMD in case she was a war bride, but nothing there...
If he was a world traveller he could have married her elsewhere, as well...

Wait a minute I am not thinking, duh.....he was born Scotland so if he went back to Aberdeen she may have been a scottish war bride

Hi J J,
Thank you for the info.
The attestation papers do refer to my David.  He seems to have dropped the Alexander from
normal usage, and was, as far as I can find out always known as David.  His grave marker is
David.
I do have the undertakers name for Yvonne's funeral.  They may have some more detail but
30 odd years is a long time ago. Also I could try Resthaven.
One unusual thing, David's wife, Yvonne and his father, Samuel are both named on the same
grave marker.
I note on this marker Yvonne's year of birth is 1899-should have checked this first.
I suppose it is very possible the name McGuffie is NOT her maiden name.
Oh, the joys of family research.
Thanks again JJ I will keep you posted.
