John Bates ,Mayor Nottingham 1810
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 10:49 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I wondering if anyone knows anything about the life and family of John Bates , Sheriff of Nottingham 1807-1808 and  Mayor in 1810 .I believe he may have died around 1833 but I'm not certain about that . I believe he may have leased land and other property at Nether Meathop , Westmorland along with four others in 1815 which included a William Melville  a cotton spinner from Nottingham and James Adam of Brymbo Hall , Denbigh who was agent for the trustees of  the late John Wilkinson who died in 1808. I would be particularly interested to know if John Bates had any family and what his profession was.

Fellsman, he could not have been Lord Mayor in 1810, as the title only came into being in 1928.  he was however the Mayor.
Also on this site it quotes him as Sheriff

Hi Skewy
there were three churches mentioned on the website above and on IGI for Castle Gate Meeting House was a John Bates christened  26 may1781 the son of another John Bates and Alice they had 3 more children Mary Ann 3rd feb 1788 ,Ellen 8th nov 1789 and James 12th apr 1792. I also found a marriage at St Peters , Nottingham on 21 dec 1786 for a John Bates and Alice Tatum these may be the family we're  looking for but  I need to find how old he was when he died .

Hi,
It looks as if two are definitely the children of John Bates and his wife Alice (nee Levers - marriage at Greasley 4 May 1784, M044762 - IGI):
Baptisms at Castle Gate Meeting - Independent
Ellen Bates 08 Nov 1789
Mary Ann 3 Feb 1788

I could be wrong, but I think the marriage between Ann Bates and Richard Maltby, isn't their daughter. Could be daughter of Robert Bates (cordwainer) and his wife Elizabeth - baptised 11 Sep 1774.

Which leaves us with marriage between Elizabeth and John Manton, in 1817 - possible that Alice died in 1795 and John remarried in 1796 (but not sure) - see IGI. There is a burial for an Alice Bates, at Nottingham St Mary, on 14 May 1795 - wife of John.

Hope all of this helps a little.
Kind regards, Paulene Smiley

And finally, before I retire for the night:

Looked on ancestry and found details of a marriage licence for John and Alice:
John Bates p. of St Mary, Nottingham & Alice Levers, lic. 04 May 1784.

Then, I looked on the Nottingham University Manuscripts site and found the marriage bond, which gives John's occupation at the time of his marriage to Alice:

Bates, John, fl 1784 woolcomber of Nottm. (St Mary), Nottinghamshire    groom
Fletcher, George, fl. 1784 (of Nottm (St Nicholas), Nottinghamshire    bondsman
Levers, Alice, fl. 1784 (of Greasley, Notts) age 20 spinster    bride.

AN/MB/180/67
Date of event: 04 . 05. 1784

Right, off to bed.
Goodnight.
