Forrester Estate, Willey
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 15:23 UTC (UK) »

Has anyone managed to find out anything about tenants on this estate in the 19th century.
I know the records office has the old estate papers, but not anything of use to me. My family farmed 5 farms on the estate (+one ancestor was bailiff at Barrow) between the 1860's and 1960's but am finding it very difficult to get info. other than what is contained in the census returns.

I came across one reference in the Journal to grandfather doing his ususal redendering of his' foxhunting song' at the annual dinner and have one photo which I think must have been a rent day.

HI I'm not sure if this will help or not but the Broseley society cover Barrow and Willey and have a collection of old newspapers available to read on the website also there isa questions and answers bit on the Quarterly newsletters.  If what you are looking for is not there you could drop them a line and see if they know anything?

Many thanks Aileen, that's a good idea because there may well be people in the Broseley area who remember my uncle who was the last of the Mears to farm there and died in 1961.

If you search from the homepage by putting in "Mears" you will find somebody asking the same questions as you in the Newsletter of May 2006.
