Suffolk Baptism - simple question
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 19:59 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

I'm looking for the baptism record of someone in who on the census indicates they were born in Mellis or Burgate in Suffolk around 1800.  These don't appear to be on the IGI.

Can somebody tell me where I can find it.  I'm happy to go and look it up if local - I'm in London.  I've tried the Suffolk FHS and a few other Suffolk genealogy sites without success, as well as the SuffolkCC who I can't seem to get a reply from.  Any other suggestion?

Thanks

Try the Society of Genealogists in London.  They have films of most parish records and an amazing library of books and indexes from all counties.    Well worth a visit.   Expensive for a day but you can put it towards annual membership.

Thanks for the suggestion Andrea, but don't think I want to go down that road.  I'm still a novice at this so a bit pricey for one baptism lookup.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks Audrey, I think I've already asked you but just in case ...

Jemima Lester (or Leycester or Lister or ...?)
Born either Mellis or Burgate, Suffolk (villages close to each other) depending on the census entry.
Birthdate between 1796 and 1802 (again, depending on the census).

Thanks

Thanks for trying Audrey.
Is it possible to check to see if the Mellis and Burgate baptisms for the period area actually covered by the BVRI?  At least then it might indicate if I'm barking up the right tree or not Wink

Thanks

Hi Jonathan,

I guess you'll have seen this entry in the IGI?

You say that Jemima was born in Mellis or Burgate, but is there any possibility that the family lived in Withersfield and had her christened there. Maybe her mother went back to her parents to give birth to her child/ren then back to Withersfield to have them christened??

JEMIMA LISTER
Female
Birth:
Christening:  05 NOV 1797   Withersfield, Suffolk, England

Parents:
Father:  EDWARD LISTER
Mother:  ELIZABETH

There appear to be 8 other children born to these parents all at Withersfield.

Hey Ferret,

Thanks for checking that out.  Yes, I had seen that possibility and researched it a bit.  When I found Jemima Lister/Lester aged 72 unmarried born and living on Parish Relief in Withersfield on the 1871 census this seemed to discount her unfortunately.  Then I found 'mine' - Jemima Hunt age 65, widow, b. Burgate, Suffolk living St Martins in the Fields, London in 1871.

Thanks for trying!  Back to the drawing board .... Wink

Cheers

Audrey, the ones baptised in Chelworth Suffolk?  Yes.  But I'm unable to connect them with Jemima Sad

Thanks

Hi Jonathan

You could try ordering the Burgate and Mellis films and view them at your nearest LDS Family History Centre in London.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

The Suffolk Record Office sells these Parish Records on microfiche.  Most Public Libraries have viewers which you could use to view them.  Many people will have already purchased these records, so it may be worth your while joining the Suffolk Mailing List and asking if someone would mind looking for you.

Just a few ideas Wink

Me yet again!

I've found the Burgate and Mellis Parish Registers reference on the LDS site.  As I've never had to use this route before I was wondering if "Location Film" actually means it is in Salt Lake City (as well as elsewhere) as I have a family member in SLC that I can bribe to go look at it.  I'm not being lazy - I have a fractured foot (so glad I work from home!) so keeping my ventures outdoors to a minimum on doctor's orders for a little while.

I guess this might be a daft question - but I was thinking, if they are available in the LDS centre in SLC why don't they appear on familysearch.org ?

Forgot to add - under Film Location it says
FHL BRITISH Film
993228 Item 15

Thanks

Jonathan

I think that although some films are kept at the FHC's, most are ordered from SLC, so if you have someone who can go to the library in person.........wonderful........I would love to go Grin

The IGI is only an index to the LDS holdings, and only represents a tiny fraction of what is available.

Broken foot.....poor you Sad  Hope you get better soon Smiley
