John NUNN - Help Please
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 23:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi,I'm wondering if anyone can help me find information on my great great great grandad john nunn.According to the 1881 census records he was born about 1851 in yaxley suffolk but I have been unable to find any other trace of him before this time.He married  joanna clarke (born abt 1851 wenhaston suffolk) on 17th nov 1875 in beccles suffolk and according to their marraige certificate johns father was also named john nunn and his occupation was a miller like his son.If anyone can offer any suggestions to solving this puzzle I would be very grateful.

Hi

The IGI had an extracted birth record of a John  Arthur William Nunn
ch.31.8.1851 Wickham Skeith, Suffolk.

father john... mother Elizabeth.

According to Genuki, from 1837 both Wickham Skeith and Yaxtley were townships or parishes in Hartismere reg. dist.

I am not familar with the county but on the map they are fairly  close together.

Maybe he is down on other census's as Arthur or William   Undecided

I also came across this family and thought it was a good possibility but a descendant of one of the daughters saw my tree on ancestry and claims my john nunn and this family are not related.

Dont take anything a gospel until you can either check or prove it yourself, she may be wrong.

Must go now, way past my bedtime here in the UK.

Will have another scout around tomorrow if no one else had found him, good luck.

Good day..... I,m afraid I have not had much luck in locating him, I think the parish church for Yaxtley is St, Mary.

The only thing that I can think of at the moment is that maybe he was illegitimate therefore not born a Nunn, if so mother may have married fairly soon afterward as they often did to a Nunn and subsequently took his name .

This is pure speculation but its a scenario I have come across many times also he may not have been, his father may have died whilst he was very young, mother remarries and again he takes the name, never knowing otherwise  Undecided

Hi

There is an old family story that has changed through the years as old stories do but the main part was that either john nunn changed his name for goddard/godard (not sure which spelling) to nunn or that the mother worked as a servent for the goddard/godard family and got her pregnant (john) but because she was already married with children the baby took her husbands name.
Neither of these stories have been proven of course but the story comes from the oldest living members of our family.

Well thats sounds quite plausable to me and would occount for why he cannot be found, I thought there must be some other  reason why .

I notice that in your first appeal, you mentioned that the family were Millers.

You could send a PM to Windy Miller, or he might see this thread as he knows a great deal about millers and milling in Suffolk and may be able to help you further.

Have been going through my White's for 1844 and found under Wenhaston parish (say Wena'ston)

James Nunn, millwright

As marriages often took place in the parish where the bride was living, I have checked Beccles and there are several references to Clarke, including one Abraham Clarke Junior, Corn Merchant of Rook Lane / Smallgate Street

will check in 1855 later.
