Hello All,
I would like to find out what happened to my great grandfather whilst he spent time in Canada. I know this is really general but I was wondering if there was anything that anyone could tell me about a Robert Colquhoun Shaw, born December 7th 1881 in Barrow in Furness, England, UK.
This is a real challenge for me because Robert left his family behind and moved to Canada alone (apparently) around 1925. He then spent a while there before returning to Paisley, Scotland in 1970 where he died a year later. The challenge is that his move was not popular within my family at the time and no one discussed anything about Robert ever.
I believe that he spent most of his time in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but have absolutely no idea what he did there, nor why he went there.
I would be very grateful for anything that anyone could find and pass onto me about him and what was doing there, whether married or fathered children, etc, etc.
Kind regards and thank you for anything that you can find,
Stephen

Hey,
Thanks to you all for your comments so far - brilliant.
So far as occupation is concerned, he seems to have been a labourer type person, I think most likely a railway coach painter or painters' labourer according to marriage and death certificates.
Stephen.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for both links above, unfortunately I don't see any mention of him on either as you say.
It is quite possible that he did indeed arrive prior to 1925.

Hi Stephen,
There is a marriage for a Robert Shaw in Winnipeg in 1925. It gives no other details than his brides name so it hard to determine if it would him or not. I found this at the Manitoba vital stats page. http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

Hi Lisaw,
That is great - I didn't know that there was an archive search for Canada.
Anyway, what is the best thing for me to do from here?
Is there anyone on the forums from that area who could get any more detail or should I just order the cert and see whether it's him or not?
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
The marriage announcement for the marriage I mentioned would maybe help a little, if there is one that is. Sometimes there are people here at rootschat that can do that kind of look up for you, I haven't noticed if anyone has done this for Manitoba. If not, you could try Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, I see a lady who is offering public record look ups. http://www.raogk.org/manitoba.htm
Good luck, Lisa
