In Manhattan in New York City, if the address ends in Street, the address is given as East or West. I'm not familiar with any South 15th Street in the New York area.
It looks like the final destination on the 1904 manifest was Springfield, Illinois.
There is an Illinois death index and other databases here: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html Some indexes for Cook County are here: http://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/ It seems like there might be a few possibilities on those for John's death.
