I am having great difficulty locating my Great Grandfather and his Sister who were both born in Canada but then travelled to the UK. The first records I have of them are in the 1891 Census and they described themselves on the 1911 Census as 'British Parentage' and 'British Resident' respectively. My Great Grandfather showed his place of birth on the 1891 Census as Quebec and the 1911 Census as St Johns, Canada. His sister as Toronto, Canada. I can't find matching records in either Ontario or Newfoundland though. My question though is what documentation would they have needed to exit Canada and enter the UK some time before 1891 and is it still archived? I havn't been able to find entries on passenger lists so don't know the exact date they arrived.
Many thanks for any help on this.

He is Alfred Joseph Webb born between 1846 and 1852 and she is Maria Webb born between 1856 and 1861. I did find a Maria Webb that looked like a 'fit' but she went and married in 1882! Many thanks

Certainly there is also St John in New Brunswick which geographically is a lot closer to Quebec where he said he was born on the 1891 UK census. I also wondered whether St Johns would have been considered as part of Canada in 1911 when Newfoundland only joined fully in 1949.
Many thanks

At the time there would have been very little tracking going on for anybody born in Canada arriving into the UK - ordinary people didn't tend to have passports prior to WWI, and Canada was part of the British empire anyway so they wouldn't need to go through the naturalization process.
Did either of them marry in the UK, and what was Alfred John's occupation? Also, do you know what religion the family were? (You are going to be trying to find church records if you want to find their births)
Many thanks for the clarification regarding documentation. Neither married although Alfred had a realtionship to produce my Grandmother. He was a musician (flautist) and I possibly have been sent a photo of him from 1911 in the Ilfracombe Town Band. Not sure about religion as he didn't appear in the 1871 Census so I'll need to look broadly for any Baptism records. Thanks again
