Hi Jackie

I'm assuming your father's adoption was post 1930. It is quite a complicated affair to apply for adoption papers. Complicated for the adoptee and even more so for other parties.

Have a look at this guide on NAS:

www.nas.gov.uk/guides/adoptions.asp

I would think the most relevant section for you wishing to apply would be:

Exceptionally, and on application to the court that originally dealt with the adoption, a person other than the adoptee may be allowed to inspect the adoption process. This is very rare and is usually only granted for reasons such as medical grounds. Once it has been examined, the packet of process papers is resealed in the presence of the person who has read them. All enquiries are kept confidential and the NAS keeps no permanent record of the names or other details of people who have looked at their adoption papers.

Hi Jackie

Why don't you contact one of the services given on the NAS guide and ask for advice. They are well placed to give you to expert advice you need. This area is full of legal requirements and procedures. You need to establish whether you have legal grounds to apply to the Court for access to your father's adoption papers.

Good luck and hope you find some answers  Smiley
