What happened in 1900?
« on: Monday 10 August 09 21:43 UTC (UK) »

Hello
I have a family in SOMERCOTES headed by Martin GILES and Annie Elizabeth
It looks like he and his wife Annie Elizabeth had
Beatrice May born 1898
Jessie born 1899

I have not 100% linked these children to Martin and Annie but I strongly suspect this is the case (does anyone have access to the Somercote records?)

Then in Dec qtr 1900 Annie and the two little children all die
Does anyone know if there was an epidemic at that time or an accident?

Hi

I can't say what happened to yours but my Grandmother's older siblings died of diptheria in the 1890's in Wales. This wiped out the whole family of children apart from the youngest son. My Great grandmother went on to have 3 more children afterwards, which included my grandmother in 1904.
There were lots of childhood diseases. Scarlet fever - my mother-in-law had that in the early 1900's obviously she survived. whooping cough, small pox etc.

I g**gled the following and it makes some interesting reading.

childhood illnesses in 1890's somercotes
