Percy & Doris Smith from Swindon, England
« on: Monday 10 August 09 21:59 UTC (UK) »

I have no experience with genealogy in NZ so seeking some help. A Percy & Doris Smith left UK sometime after 1926 ( I am extra vague as there are 2 possible marriages which add to my confusion )I know where they were living  in Aukland but not when although sometime between c.1930 & 1975. What avenues of research are open to me to find out more about them?
Thanks, Toby Webb.

Hi Toby

As a starting point, you could search the NZ online Death index for your couple.

http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/

Depending on just what it is you want to find out about them, then obtaining a death record (for either, or both), might assist you further.  (Note:  A "printout" version of the record, offers maximum information).

You may also find the Resources section of this board, helpful.

Hi Tony
Sadly many options, any chance of a middle name for either to narrow it down

Hi again Toby

True  ... there are many options.   Smiley

*  Have you got their "years of birth" ?

*  An occupation for Percy SMITH ?

There are a good number of probate records on the Archives NZ website  ... perhaps your Percy SMITH features amongst those ?

http://www.archives.govt.nz/

*   What is the significance of year 1975 which you mention ?

*   What was the street name and suburb in Auckland ?

Cemetery record - Purewa Cemetery, Auckland

SMITH - Percival Lancelot Patterson

http://www.purewa.co.nz/

[A "possible Doris" also at same site - 76 years / died 1979 ]

It appears that there is a "Book of Remembrance" for this Mr SMITH.

You may also be able to obtain further information from the funeral directors listed ?    (It's possible that firm has a website - or email address.    Try a "google" search - "name of firm" OR "Funeral Directors Assn of NZ").

A few extra facts.
Percival Lancelot Patterson Smith was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, England sometime late 1893 /early 1894 and served an apprenticeship in the Great Western Railway.
He lived at 77, Hillcrest Avenue, Aukland N14.
He married in Barton upon Irwell district which contains part of Manchester so the pre voyage  Flixton address makes sense.
I now need to digest all the rest of the amazing information that you all have given me. Thank you so much.
Toby.

The significance of "1975" is that my mother died in that year and therefore the addresses in her book had to be prior to 1975.

Do you have censuses in NZ like we have every 10 years in the UK and if so can one access them easily?
Thanks. Toby.

If you can't find family via the above burial links
The New Zealand Herlad will probably have death notices
If no one is able to look these up the North Shore Branch of NZSG have a mail service for this,
Pm me if no one is able and I could write from here which is probably quicker

Thank you for the continuing help. Without census returns, how does one investigate families in NZ?

G'day Toby,

We have lots of ways that are not dissimilar to those in England. We use electoral rolls and cemetery transcriptions. Our birth, death and marriage certs contain a lot more info than those you get over there and are therefore of much more value. Death notices in newspapers can be helpful, many church records are indexed and our National Archives holds a good deal of wills etc.

The quantity and quality of the records can vary by location but the Smiths lived in Auckland and that is well covered. Ask what you want to know and we will tell you what can be done about it.

You may or may not already have this.

FreeBMD has his birth registered Mar qtr 1894, Highworth, so could have been born late 1893 or early 1894.

1901 census has him aged 7, with grandparents Henry and Emma SMITH at 22 Gordon Road, Swindon. Henry was an undertaker.

From NZ Records
Purewa B/Rs
SMITH, Doris
Date of burial 15 May 1979
Age 76
Address 704 Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland
Birthplace England
Occupation Widow
Undertaker Weir
NoK Mr M SMITH, son

PLP SMITH mentioned in next record but no details given

Purewa Cremations
SMITH Percival Lancelot Patterson
Date cremated 6 Sep 1966
Last Residence 77 Hillcrest Rd, Northcote, Auckland
Funeral Director H Norris
Ashes were scattered in Garden of Rememberance, plaque on plot 16/2/81.
