G'day Alan,
Percival was a nephew of my grandfather and in my family trees I try to fill in as much as I can with, since most of the gaps concern non direct lines, minimum expence. (  If I had bought all the certificates that I would have liked I would have gone bust )
I have a slight problem with who Doris was ( born Johnson or Stallard )as there are 2 marriages listed showing a Percival L P Smith or Percival L Smith marrying within a reasonable time frame i.e. 1926 or 1930. The former marriage is to a Doris and the latter to a Dorothy. Having experienced some remarkable first name changes in the family, I am not prepared to write off Dorothy yet.
I am however perfectly sure that my Percival born in Swindon on 22 Dec.1893 is the one who went to NZ with Doris in 1956 and that their's are the death details that you kind people have supplied.
There remains therefore whether they had children. My mother believed that they had 2 one of whom was John M P Smith.
Thanks also Ian for those extra bits that you have added which just confirm even more that I have the right family. Her final address was unknown to me.
Toby.

Hi Toby

Yes, I know what you mean about "changes of names" but I do think that the 1926 marriage to a "Doris JOHNSON" is the correct one.  Wink

[The 1930 marriage was at Portsmouth - the bride was Dorothy M. STALLARD - groom shown only as Percival L. SMITH ?]

The passenger list details given earlier by Alan, seem very clear - that Percival L. P. SMITH was accompanied by a Doris SMITH (and not a "Dorothy M. SMITH". )

I can confirm also that the Doris SMITH who died in 1979 (for whom there is a record on the Purewa Cemetery website) is the same lady recorded on the NZ online Death Index 1979/  32203.
[Died 27 April 1979 - Ashes interred at Purewa on 15 May 1979}:
Her birthdate on the index, is given as 18 June 1902 (which matches with the Doris SMITH on the voyage with Percival L. P. SMITH).

Hi Lu,
Just come off the phone. It turns out to  be a Mrs. J. Smith and Hillcrest Avenue  meant nothing to her.
Thanks for your help. Toby.

Hi Toby

Well  ... we can't win 'em all  ... can we ?   Cheesy  Cheesy

I guess the following are your options now ?

If you can't find family via the above burial links
The New Zealand Herlad will probably have death notices
If no one is able to look these up the North Shore Branch of NZSG have a mail service for this,
Pm me if no one is able and I could write from here which is probably quicker

Good luck.

Hi Lucy.
You previously mentioned a Book of Remembrance which might give some useful names, but I found I could not open it. Am I missing some procedure?

Hi Toby

Please re-read my reply # 6 for what I actually said.   Wink

You will need to contact the funeral directors to obtain further information.

I have just been reading other sites to try to get a better understanding of things NZ. Can anyone explain to me what South Rolls & Fendalton Rolls of the 1940's were and whether there was anything similar in North Island?
Thanks, Toby.

Those were references which I posted on another thread and they relate to the names of two electoral districts in the Christchurch (South Island) area.    The whole of New Zealand was / is ... divided by electoral boundaries within the various regions and cities.

Hi Lu.
After 1 month it seems likely that I am not going to get an answer from the funeral director. Who actually is the guardian of the Book of Remembrance?

Hi Toby

Go back to the Purewa Cemetery website  ... and click on the
"Book of Memories" link (left-hand sidebar).   I think you'll probably need to make contact with the cemetery, to obtain this information ??
