McCristal family

Hi

I am trying to track down McCristal ancestors. I have John McCristal and his wife Mary (nee Hamilton) coming to Australia in 1841. John was born c1820 in Tyrone, his father was Thomas and his mother was Margaret McKeon - don't know their dates of birth, or if they stayed in Ireland.

That's where I lose the trail. I did find a Thomas McCristal in a 'Tithe Allotment' but don't know what that means.

Can anybody please assist?

This will explain Tithe Applotment Books (scroll down the page a bit for that section)-

Civil registration in Ireland (births, deaths, Catholic marriages) started in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) and 1st complete census of Ireland is 1901 so for earlier dates you really need to know where a family lived (parish if not actual townland) and then see if any church records survive, etc.

I haven't hit the Irish side of my ancestry until now, although I knew the connection was there.

I have Thomas McCristal's Tithe Applotment in 1826 listed as Tyrone, Kildress, Strens. Is this enough for me to track down from the other side of the world? Interestingly, he also seems to pop up in Antrim in the 1830s.

Does the Tithe Applotment mean he was a farmer who had to pay taxes to a landlord? Forgive my ignorance; this is all new terminology to me.

If you have 'found' Thomas McCristal in Co. Tyrone in Tithe Applotment records (read the link I gave which explains it) and then in Co. Antrim in 1830s I would start to suspect that you have found records for 2 different people with the same name.
An entry in Tithe Applotment (if it is the corect person) gives you a place to start searching for other existing records (perhaps church records).
