Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and It's Devonblue's turn.......I'm sure you'll be able to help with this one.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.
******************************
Margaret THOMAS married Stephen WRIGHT at Handsworth Parish Church, Staffs on 13 Jan 1859. He was the son of Stephen WRIGHT and Mary JONES and was born in Diglis St Worcester in 1829 and was variously described as a Coach Smith, Blacksmith, Axle tree forger and Smith. By the time of their marriage the couple had 6 living children and were on the 1851 census with the first two in Barn St in Birmingham (HO 107/2059/349/40).
Margaret THOMAS was born about 1827 and the marriage certificate says she was the daughter of Thomas THOMAS, a hatter. The 1851 census states that she was born in Newport Salop, the 1861 says Salop, Shrewsbury and the 1871, 1881 and 1891 all say Shrewsbury. She died in Smethwick in 1897. Stephen WRIGHT died 2 years later in Aston at his daughter’s house.
My cousin and I who research this family together have never been able to find any trace of Margaret THOMAS prior to 1851. My cousin did a lot of the work ‘pre PC’ and visited records offices and churches etc over half of Shropshire it seemed but all to no avail. The IGI doesn’t seem to be much help either.
In 1851 also in Barn St Birmingham (HO 107/2054/344/31) is another household headed by a Margaret THOMAS aged 60, a laundress born in Chirbury, Salop and we wonder if this is our Margaret’s mother.
Another mystery in this family is that Elizabeth WRIGHT the couple’s third daughter was born in Middlesex, London in 1852 according to all the censuses. We have never found the correct birth reference for her and also wonder why she was born there; all the other 8 children are born in either Birmingham or Smethwick.
The last query is that Margaret and Stephen’s son Stephen Ernest James WRIGHT b 1854 in Birmingham also does a disappearing act in 1881 and has been untraceable on the census. A search of his previous known address on the census reveals the house is empty as is the house at their next known address. Stephen E J WRIGHT married Keziah CLEMO on 25 February 1877 at St George's Church, Birmingham. Keziah CLEMO was illegitimate and was born in Birmingham in 1856. Stephen EJ Wright was an Axle tree Forger. Their first child, Keziah WRIGHT was born in 1880 so should be on the 1881 census too. Were they just missed or are they lurking under some other name?
Just to confirm, we do have ALL the census refs except for Margaret THOMAS in 1841 and for Stephen E J and Keziah WRIGHT and family in 1881.

While looking for Keziah born 1880 I happened upon this interesting family in Derbyshire 1881
RG11/3402 Pg20
Interesting because the head John Wright is a wheelwright born Shrewsbury , his wife Emily is born Middlesex c1857 and all the little Wrights bar one are born Birmingham. Living with them is a niece Lizzie ( maybe Kizzie ) born Birmingham 1880. Oh and one of the sons is a Coach Body maker

I think the tick mark is a later mark to highlight those born out of county.

Not sure it is relevant though as the Wright family are from Worcester. Interesting the wife is from Middlesex .....

Has this one been looked at... for the birth of Elizabeth Wright (Middx). The mother may of been on a day trip to the summer sales and registered when she got home... Births Jun 1851 Wright Elizabeth Newport Sp 18 129 2 of my own children were born in Berks and registered in Bucks. No, we were looking for a Middlesex birth bearing in mind they lived in Birmingham! I suppose it's worth a try.

The Middlesex connection is almost certainly the gun trade. Many men who worked in the Birmingham gun industry moved to work at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, Middlesex. Some remained in Middlesex, others returned to Birmingham.
This is why you find the occasional Middlesex birth in apparently settled Brum families. It isn't always that the father was a gunsmith - sometimes the mother gave birth while visiting relatives in Enfield.
Possibly Margaret had a brother who was a gunsmith in Enfield, or a sister married to one.

This does look like it could be the same Margaret in an earlier incarnation. Def looks like the wrong person now.
Sloe Gin: Thanks for the info about the gun trade. I didn't know that. The Wrights were all actually Axle tree filers/smiths/blacksmiths etc so it would more likely be someone connected to Margaret I should think. Thanks for this.
