I am looking for Arthur Ernest Downes born about 1884 who went to work in York and married Nora Nendick in 1911. At the baptism of their daughter in 1912 was a Sarah Downes also.
Can you help with ANY Downes family in Yorkshire that he may have come from - I cannot find them.
There was an Arthur born in Driffield in 1884 and also an Arthur in Wakefield about 1885 but I can't find any more in Yorkshire.

Thanks for answering.
I knew they had divorced but had no idea when. He also remarried and outlived Nora. According to his age at death (85) in 1969 at Ilkeston I have the date of birth about 1884.
I am only guessing that he was from Yorkshire because of him working in York when he met Nora, at a house on The Mount, but no name or number. he would have been about 27 in 1911.
Also because I found Arthur Downes 1884 Driffield, and one in Wakefield, on a search.
It's wild guessing at the moemnt.

The 1911 Census Index searches show an Arthur DOWNES age 27 in Driffield - is that the one you found?
The following persons appear to be in a house with him
John E DOWNES 38 (b abt 1873)
Miriam H DOWES 26 (b abt 1885
Joseph DOWNES 3
FreeBMD shows a Marriage with the following 2 on the same page:
Arthur DOWNES
Miriam Hannah STAVELEY
Bridlington [Yks ERY] - Jun Qtr 1907
The marriage cert will hopefully be very useful to identifying your Arthur Ernest

Yes, it looks as though that is the one, but if he married Mirian I guess it is the wrong Arthur.

I got the marriage cert.
Arthur Ernest Downes was 23 at the time of his marriage to Nora Nendick on Dec 24th 1911, his father was Arthur Cuthbert Downes a motor man. but no address.
The couple were in service and residing at 74 Aluen(?) Terrace York, which must be where they were in service.
Definitely not the Arhtur Downes from Driffield as we thought.
Now I had bette find our about Arthur Cuthbert Downes if you can help me please? That appears the direction to follow.
There was a witness at the marriage callsed S Downes, may be a Sarah, his sister perhaps.

Good news then - the marriage cert was just the ticket!
So Arthur Ernest DOWNES, according to that document, was born around 1888. as opposed to 1884....
FreeBMD has:

So on balance of probability, it might be the Sarah DOWNES/ S DOWNES at the baptism of Arthur jnr & Nora's child, and at Arthur & Nora's marriage - may be his mother, Sarah DOWNS nee BRITTON
