Mary Ellen Who?
« on: Tuesday 11 August 09 15:09 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help please.
I recently found my great grandfather George Beer,b 1888, who lived in Seymour, was not married to who I thought.
I thought he married Mary Rhodes in 1910 in Chesterfield, 7b 1520, but it seems she married Charles Winnard.
There were 3 names for Chesterfield 7b 1520, George Beer, Charles Winnard, and Mary Rhodes, on Free BMD.
On the 1911 census he is married to a Mary Ellen age 19. She was born in Poolsbrook, and they had been married for 2 years.
They had a son Colin, age 1 month, and lived at 123 Seymour, Staveley.
Can anyone tell me what her maiden name was Please, or do I have to get the marriage certificate for George.
Can I do that without Mary Ellen's name?

You can get the marriage cert for George without knowing who his bride is.

Or you may prefer to get the birth cert for Colin, which would give you Mary Ellen's maiden name.

Or it might be worth a scout round first to see what Mary Ellen's we can find age 9 in 1901 and born Poolsbrook, just to see if we can find that missing marriage entry!

Interestingly, there is another entry one year later for Mary BEER , Sept 1911 with the same reference number.

This is what's confusing me.
It definitely says born in Poolsbrook, on the 1911 census.

Can rule Mary Ellen Parry out I think - no entry for any quarter for a marriage in 1910 in Chesterfield (images checked)

There are two Beer children registered in Chesterfield in 1912 - mother's maiden names listed as Beer and Haycox.
This suggests that the entry Hammerman found in 1911 may be the missing bride from 1910.

There is a Stella Beer born in 1912 mother's maiden name Haycox.
A Mary Ellen Haycox age 8 on the 1901 census, could this be her?
Colin named his daughter Stella.

Can I suggest CG Fan, that you add a postem to the entry for George BEER's marriage, so that anyone in the future looking can find Mary Ellen HAYCOX?

Hi Hammerman, I'm still fairly new to this Roots Chat, and I don't know what a postem is, or how add one.
Can you please tell me how to do this.
Thank you.

If you look at the listing on Free BMD, along the line from the entry for George Beer's marriage you can click on an icon of some glasses "Scan available".

You will find a link to "Add a postem". It puts an envelope symbol next to the entry.

Here you can add comments to the entry; certainly add what you now know about Mary Ellen Haycox as her entry is missing from the listing.

As the transcription for this quarter is at >99% it's unlikely it will be added now. I'm not sure if there's a way of contacting Free BMD regarding completely missing entries like this. Does anyone else know?
