Bryden Family of Lochmaden
« on: Tuesday 11 August 09 16:42 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone
I am a Newbie.
I am researching my husband's family tree, and wondered if anyone can help me.
Gt.Gt.Grandfather I think was John Bryden carter b abt 1820 who married Isabella Grierson b abt 1820 and m 1846.
I only have them as having one son though I feel sure there may be more, and he was:-
Gt.Grandfather William Bryden b Lochmaben 1847 married Agnes Johnstone b 1814 Kirkmichael,a farmers daughter 1873.
I know they moved to Llanelly,Wales where they had 4 children Robert b 1873,Grace Elzabeth b 1874,Elizabeth Grierson b 1875 and William John b 1877. There were more extended family members in Llannelly.
After their father William (a Draper) died they moved back to Scotland to Lochmaben.
1881 census shows them in Bruce st.,Lochmaben
1891 shows them in Beerflatt,Lochmaben
1901 shows them in Leeds

This all the info I have.
Can anyone please help with more, or even tell me if what I have is ligit.
Grateful thanks
Elizabeth

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

WILLIAM BRYDEN  Spouse:  AGNES BRYDEN JOHNSTONE
Marriage:  12 FEB 1873   Kirkmichael, Dumfries

Do you have a copy of that marriage entry confirming Williams parents as John & Isabella as you seem to be unsure who his parents were

The only William Bryden b Lochmaben 1847 on the 1861 census has a mother Eliza.  His occ was mason's apprentice

Looking at the 1851 entry - there is a Grierson connection.  Indexed as Bryuber

1851 for Lochmaben - all b Lochmaben except Janet Shankland

Elizabeth Bryden 31
William 4
Jannet  2
Francis Grierson 22  brother
Jane Grierson 11 sister
Jannet Shankland 4  niece b Tundergarth

Yes I do have a certificate confirming Williams parents as John Bryden Carter (deceased) and Isabella Bryden N Grierson.
Agnes's parents are shown as John Johnstone (Farmer deceased) and Grace Johnstone n Bryden (Deceased).
I have been told that the maiden name of the bride was usually includud in the married surname.
Do you know if this is right?
I am in touch with a lady in America who is part of the same family but our facts differ, so I'm experiencing a bit of a brain freeze.
Thanks
Elizabeth
