1911 Census
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 09:04 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I am hoping that someone can help with this mystery.
I looked up my Maunder line in the 1911 Census and the youngest child's name appears to have changed!
Frederick George Maunder(b1889) and Alfred Henry(1891)  were in the Bristol Home for Boys, Cumberland Road in the 1901 census. John Richard Maunder ( father) died in 1896.
Clara( mother) and daughter Alice were living at 13 Ashley St, Ashley, Bristol 1901 census (thanks to Arranroots for this info  Cheesy  )
The 1911 Census has Clara widow 54
                                     Frederick George 22
                                     Albert Edward    18
I wonder what happened to Alfred? or am I looking at a different family
Cheers
Anne

Could Albert Edward be another child - ages 2 years different - who was staying with relatives on the night of the 1901 census?

Hello again Anne

As Irene suggests, there is a separate birth registration in Barton Regis for both boys - Albert is in 1893 - so they are two separate individuals.

You need to keep searching on 1911, it seems - unless he had gone abroad?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Irene

Only problem with that one is that his place of birth is given as Weston super Mare - but not always accurate!

The birth cert would sort it out I suppose.

Where did you see "sripe dresser" Anne - can you post the relevant bit somewhere so that we can see?  What is Frederick's occupation on other docs, so that we can see what skills he had?

Hi,
Sorry, here is 1891: RG12/1984/32/18.

Sripe dresser is listed as Frederick's occupation in the 1911 Census.
On his marriage certificate  he is listed as a fireman on boats as was his father

Hmmm - that doesn't help much, does it?

What about censuses?

Frederick was a scholar in the 1901 census at the boys home with Alfred.

Frederick was born in St George, Bristol. Perhaps I'm in the wrong tree  Grin

They also dropped the s from Maunders

Oh sorry - I was thinking Frederick was the father - silly me!

 Embarrassed

Can you post the relevant portion of the 1911 so that we can take a squint at it?

Some ideas from

 http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/s.html

Stick dresser

Tripe dresser

Stone dresser

The board of guardians would have been responsible for apprenticing out a boy in receipt of poor relief, so it would be a good idea to get hold of their records and see whether there is any reference to Frederick being apprenticed to a tradesman.
