US Immigration - James T BEER(s)
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 10:11 UTC (UK) »

I am still trying to solve a mystery regarding James T BEER(s), who was recorded in the 1871 census in Dover (UK) aged 17.
The next record we have of him is his marriage in Salt Lake City, Utah, in March 1880.
Family legend has it that he traveled to the US in 1871, then returned to England some time later to finish his medical training, before finally emigrating to Utah in 1877.
I have been unable to locate any records of his entering or leaving the States - can anybody help PLEASE!!!!  This has been bugging me for a couple of years now.
Thanks.
Bill

The actual Ellis Island records are at http://www.ellisisland.org/  However, as Bill may know, Ellis Island didn't open until 1892, so that wouldn't likely have James unless he went back again.

Hi Bill: This doesn't answer the question, but...

To refresh myself, I looked up James Beers in the 1880 U.S. census on the LDS Family Search site. This would be James Beers, druggist, if my memory and the census serve me, living in Salt Lake with wife Annie (nee Heath) and brother Henry.

I noticed in the census info that Annie's mother was born in "N. Brun." That would be New Brunswick, Canada. That made me wonder if James didn't possibly enter North America through Canada.

According to the IGI, Annie Clarinda Heath Beers was born in Utah, so that may make it unlikely that James came through Canada. But it's not impossible. Or perhaps the James Beer whom merjones found entering the U.S. through Boston is him.

James Beer(s) does not appear on the Castle Garden site, which records entries through New York City before 1892.

Perhaps finding where his brother Henry Beer entered the U.S. might be helpful, since Henry was enumerated with James and Annie Beers in Salt Lake City in the 1880 census.  Henry is not on the Castle Garden site either.

Regards,
John

Hi John / merjones

James would have been 18 in 1872 and it is very unlikely he would have listed himself as a labourer, having been working in a dispensary.

If he did in fact arrive in the USA before 1877 he would almost certainly have headed straight to Utah, as he had relatives already settled in Salt Lake City.

We know that Henry arrived in New York with his family on the Greece on 11th April 1877, but James was not with them as far as we can tell.

Bill: Have you posted a request for a look up on Canadian passenger lists? Might be worth a try. He might also have come through any number of American ports other than Boston or New York. Philadelphia and Baltimore come to mind as the most likely.

I'm trying Castle Garden again with wild cards for the vowels.

Hi Bill: I tried searching the Castle Garden site (New York arrivals before 1892) a multitude of ways, but came up empty. I searched Beer, Beers, Bear, Bears (with and without James). I searched James with Tucker (surname). I even searched simply under occupation "druggist" and the British term "chemist." Nothing, more nothing, and further nothing.

I did find the death record for Annie C. Beers among the Idaho death records if you need it.

Time to expand the search to other places of entry.
