St.Mary Rotherithe . Early 1800s.
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 18:53 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have baptism, marriage, death records for St Mary, Rotherithe for late 1700s, early 1800s. Have Joseph LUCAS bap 1826, Eliza Sarah LUCAS bap 1822, Samuel LUCAS bap 1824 and William LUCAS bap 1828 at that church - would appreciate lookup of full details for these baptisms and any other LUCAS b/m/d entries 1780 to 1831 (eg possible marriage Samuel LUCAS to Sarah ? approx 1820). Any help in tracing this LUCAS family would be appreciated.

Hi

This website holds the indexes for St Mary Rotherhithe baptisms 1834-1870

There is a charge for searching the index

http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.asp

You can also purchase their CDs of the parsih registers for baptisms, marriages and burials 1812-1825 and 1834-1855.

Otherwise the registers themselves are held at the London Metropolitan Archives which has a handwritten alphabetical index by year which is time consuming to search but better than trying to trawl through the registers of any parish in the London area, since nearly all such parishes had large populations with many entries in their registers which makes trawling through them when a very specific date is not given really quite hardwork.

At present there are many many requests on the London and Middlesex board and the Surrey (metropolitan area) for look ups for registers deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives. At present only one person seems to be obliging and that is my co-moderator Dawn who has a large backlog of requests. You also have to be realistic about requesting what is possible as a look up

'full details for these baptisms and any other LUCAS b/m/d entries 1780 to 1831'

Eventually the LMA digitalisation project - which is going to take some years to fulfil will be the answer but be aware with such a large parish and a not particularly uncommon surname that all Lucas entries in a 50 year time slot in St Mary Rotherhithe registers may be a lot more than you were expecting and that London was constantly needing 'fresh blood' from the provinces as the mortality rate was so high and London was growing all the time, so many London families in reality do not have a history of any great length stretching back into the C18th in the London/metropolitan Surrey area.

To Valda. Thanks for your helpful response - the Docklands site is fascinating. Apologies for the rather broad request - point taken. But ... I did notice a September 2008 Rootschat Surrey lookup offer for this church ( 1813- 1825 B,M &D). Thought the person involved might see my posting.

To Valda

Thank you very much for the latest post on the Lucas family.  This is our family and now takes us reliably back a further generation.

Cheers

Could  anyone tell me  where it is likely  my GGGrandfather could be employed. On an entry i have it states he lived in Rotherhide and was a mariner,  i would like to gain more information about him. He was a Thomas Nettlefold, b approx 1804, married an Amelia  Blake Alverstoke Hampshire 1826. I know quite a bit about the family ,but i would be interested if anyone knew of his likely place of work. Kind Regards CAROLEOH Wink

Hi

Basically the answer is he worked on a boat/s. If he didn't own his own, far less likely, then on anyone else's. Once he came back from a trip he would go to the Rotherhithe wharf and try to find another boat where someone was taking on sailors.
