Kevin - given what you do know I'd either telephone to ask if they can still supply or just fill in the bits you can on the form & attach a note apologising & explaining the GRO ref is wrong & you'd appreciate their help if possible. Worst is you'll lose the cost of a phone call or stamp & best is a certificate - I've not used Warrington, but RO's vary in how flexible they are with incomplete information.

mshrmh - My wife managed to speak to the nice people at Warrington RO this morning and as I typed this I am filling in the form from Warrington RO and composing a letter to them with the information I do know and they have said they will do there best to locate the required certificate.
I am having to word the letter very carefully, since I do not have any idea which bits on the GRO Index are correct - just hope the Registration District, Quarter and Year are OK.
I will also include details of who we believe the father to be which will probably help more then anything. Have no ideas of the mother's name at present other then the GRO Index says its Conner ?
I will keep this thread open and let everyone know how I get on, in the meantime any other suggestions would be appreciated in case this does not work out.

Kevin - glad Warrington has "nice people" (most RO's seem to in my experience, though like in all walks of life there are exceptions) & hope they'll come through for you.

Below is the answer the GRO gave when I queried them about why they could not issue a certificate despite the entry being in their index:
"We are unable to issue a certificate as the entry you have located is a 'rogue entry'. Registrars make copies of entries which are sent to this office. From these entries, we create references which are then listed on the indexes. In some instances, these references are 'Rogue Entries' which mean that false entries have been forwarded to us and subsequently errors occur within the indexes. Errors such as these usually occur in the early years of registration when registrars were paid a nominal amount for each registration made."
Since this was the only entry for Janet Walker in the time-frame I can not believe somebody at Warrington made the entry up. Which if I have read the above correctly is what the GRO are saying happened.
We are still waiting to see if the Registry Office at Warrington can supply the certificate with the little bit of firm information - i.e. Name approx birth year and father's name, we can supply.
